I didn't really like it (realistic fiction... Ugh) but not badly written (the reason for the extra star). It also got better at the end but still not my kind of book. I would have rather (MUCH rather) read a fictional fantsy book but it was ok.... I will not (repeat WILL NOT) read any more ny Carl Hiaasen because I hate (abhor) reading nonfiction and realistic but will if I have to (this was a novel I had to read for school). Sorry all you nonfiction lovers but I despise nonfiction. >:O
A very good style of writting Carl Hiaasen switches between characters to add a very cool book. Even this book has a werid story line its still very enjoyable to read.
This was a read aloud with my boys and I thought it was just OK. They liked it, I didn’t. It was such a slog for me to get through—I thought it was so boring. I can appreciate nature conservation, but there are so many other books that are much more readable. I’m not sure why this was awarded a Newberry.
Also, hate the fat-phobic language and “classic” dumb, fat bully. I realize this book was written before that was really recognized and it’s no worse than Harry Potter, but it is such a tired trope that has not aged well in the last 20 years.

Read to my son. Kind of slow. Honestly not my favorite.
Synopsis:
Roy doesn't want to be here. He doesn't want to be heckled on the bus, and he really doesn't want to be in Florida at all--but when he spots a running boy from the school bus, everything changes. A pancake house construction, an overeager cop, a kick-butt soccer player, and a bunch of owls might not seem related--but they are, and it's incredible. This environmental mystery keeps the pace high and the tone fun, even when the life of innocent owls hangs in the balance.
My review:
Reading this again as an adult is weird. I know the story by heart, but it doesn't impact me as much as it did when I was a kid. I absolutely adored this as a child, but it doesn't hit as hard. That being said, the storytelling is solid, the characters are fun, and it's never boring. Sometimes the dialogue is awkward, and for some reason, all of these Floridians talk like they're middle-aged adults from the South. Other than that, it's pretty good, but it's not nearly as good as Flush or Scat.
Content warning: light cursing, bullying and harassment
