This novel is quite cleverly written but very twisted and I wasn’t thrilled about being left on a cliffhanger. Hoping there’s a sequel so I get some closure
More like 3.5
I enjoyed majority of Urquhart's first novel. I think it did a really good job at setting up the characters, the setting, the premise, but the twist, albeit surprising, came across a bit confusing. There was a bit of clarity in the last few chapters, but the build up to the twist and then the reveal was a little off for me personally. All in all, I am very excited to check out the next novel and see where Wren's journey continues.

I love the Morbid podcast and I was super excited to read Alaina’s debut book!!! Sadly, I had a very hard time getting attached to characters or engaged in the story until the last few pages. Maybe I’ll give book two try down the line but not right now. Honestly a little disappointed.
This book is not nearly as bad as people say it is. It’s clearly a debut and I’m sure her writing will get better with experience, but other reviews make it sound horrible. It’s just a standard thriller and is pretty enjoyable.

I have never listened to the author’s podcast and did not know it existed prior to buying this book. I still wouldn’t know about it if not for the little blurb on the front cover. I feel like this book was written more for the shock value (I.e. the descriptive torture elements) than the actual story. It was very choppy for me and it was hard to keep track of who was where when the author switched between the two characters. However, as someone who also works in the pathology field, I appreciated light being shined onto the professions mentioned.
