Beneath the Surface
Sugarlake Series, Book 4
By: Emily McIntire
Narrated by: Blake Lockheart, Cecily Foster
This is an amazing series. Each book as good as the last. I was looking forward to hearing Lily's story. We had glimpses of her in previous books, but never really knew the story behind her disappearance. Now we are treated to an emotional journey, packed with secrets, attraction, fear and love. Lily is hiding. From what? Well, that you have to listen to find out! But it's been years and her brother, Chase is giving it a final shot to find her. Hiring Mason, the PI with a fantastic reputation is giving him his last hope. Mason does find her, but his attraction to the woman is keeping him from calling his client. As these two get closer though, Mason's secrets and past come to haunt him. What will become of these two? Emily McIntire had me pulled into their story, wanting to know exactly how it was all going to play out. It's unpredictable, exciting and full of love. We do get back to Sugar Lake, see all of our friends, feel that sense of family and community. It's the best kind of listen. This is should be a one click for all.
Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster are our storytellers and what a story they tell us! Lockheart is the broody, strong and passionate Mason/Alex. He brings out sides of this man, from child to adult and gives us every feeling. Foster is new to me, and I loved her voice! Perfectly suited for Lily, she gives her that hint of constant desperation, longing for permanence and true love. I enjoyed this team and will be watching for more from them.

At last we get Lily's story. I knew this one was going to be complicated and the saddest one of all. I personally didn’t like Lily, since book 1 she annoyed me, but I will say her story is everything. Her healing and growth is out of this world. Lily ran away at such a young age and her life choices weren’t the greatest. Years later her brother hires a private investigator, Mason, to find her. He finds her no problem. What he didn’t expect was to fall in love with her. Mason and Lily are both running away from their past and what they don’t is that they are going to save each other. This book was so raw and sad. It was the perfect ending to the series.

THIS FREAKING BOOK. Absolutely beautiful & heart wrenching every step of the way. I have been impatiently waiting for Lily’s story since book one of this series & Emily did not disappoint! I fell IN LOVE with Mason & Lily. Their relationship is so raw & real that it gave me all the emotions. This is one of those books that you connect with on a deeper level. We get to experience everything Lily went through & where exactly she’s been all this time away from home & the people who love her. There were so many plot twists I didn’t see coming that I was OBSESSED with! This is a very intense story, it’s one with broken souls, filled with scars & some very particular spicy preferences. I can’t say enough good things about Lily & Mason’s story - I mean just wow. If you are someone who doesn’t have any triggers, go into this book blind, you will thank me later. Emily did such a beautiful job making this book everything it should have been. It’s not an easy simple love story, it takes a lot of work for their HEA but man is it worth the journey. I also loved how we get a wrap up for all the other characters in this series as well, it was the cutest thing ever! I can’t say enough good things about this book - a must read!!

Lily's story was my most anticipated one of this series and I was not disappointed. I have no idea how each book in this series is a 5 star read and yet they get better and better, but they absolutely do! Emily McIntire is 100% an auto-buy/read author for me.
The descriptions of Lily's addiction, the trauma, the single mother struggle, it was all written so perfectly. Mason, oh my word, where do we get a Mason?! I loved that this book focuses on the romance between Lily and Mason until a certain point and then expands further to bring in the whole rest of the Sugarlake couples.

I'd be giving this book 5 stars if it weren't for the content warning in the beginning which encourages the reader to "go in blind." I wholeheartedly disagree with that sentiment, but I AM glad that she pointed out the much darker turn this book takes and provided CWs on her website.
This one is the darkest yet and gets a little more kinky/taboo than the other books, a fact that I enjoyed. I really loved Lily as FMC and everything she did to make a better life for her and her son. Her resiliency made her one of my favorite characters in the entire series. The ending happened a bit too quickly for my taste and was almost "too neat" but I understand wanting to give EVERYONE an epilogue and HEA.

This was intense beginning with the first line. We meet Lily who is full of scars. She has moved away from everyone she knew to start a new life with her son. Her family has no idea where she is or if shes even alive.
Mason has Secrets. Lots of them. He is watching Lily for one of his clients and he isnt meant to mingle. That rule goes out the window when he decides to go to the diner she waitresses at. He just sits in his booth watching her. He has a job to do but his sexual parts are not cooperative at all. He has to have her.
This was such a great story for Lily. If you haven't read the first few books of this series, I suggest you do. Lily is Chases sister who ran away a few years ago and got caught up in drugs. Emily did such an incredible job depicting how her life had gone while she was away. We got to catch up with an old friend IMO.
No one does angst quite like Emily McIntire. She is the QUEEN. Loved this story. I'm so excited to read more by this talented writer.
