Title: Beneath the Surface
Author: Emily Macintyre
Publication date: July 6th, 2021
Series: Sugarlake (#4)
Summary: Lily
We all have scars.
Mine are hidden beneath ink and smiles,
hard to see and easy to feel.
But the most painful ones are deeper.
Branded on my soul, reminding me of what I've lost.
I'm broken.
Sick.
Disturbed.
Then he shows up, and loves my jagged pieces.
But monsters linger long after they're gone,
and sometimes you can't outrun their shadows.
No matter how much you ache to forget.
Mason
We all have secrets.
Mine are hidden beneath ink and lies,
hard to find and easy to fake.
But the most painful ones are bigger.
Branded on my soul, reminding me of what I've lost.
I'm an enigma.
A mirage.
A liar.
Then I find her, and she loves my hidden pieces.
But history lingers long after you've gone,
and sometimes you can't outrun your past.
No matter how much you want to give her forever.
*Beneath the Surface is a full-length, interconnected standalone and book four in the Sugarlake Series. The series can be read in any order, however it is highly recommended to start with book one (Beneath the Stars) to enhance your reading experience.*
*Beneath the Surface features strong language, explicit sexual scenes, and mature/disturbing situations that are triggering for some. Reader discretion is advised.*
Review: Honestly this is one of the last four books that I wish I had read the series because this book is amazing. I will have to go back through and read the first three. Seriously though absolutely amazing. This is a romance sub-genre that I just don't read very much but goodness this book alone is making me rethink that. I literally do not want to put the book down but I've had to a few times just to not finish it and want more. I can't tell if I cried towards the end because I'm pregnant or because the ending just hit me that hard. I love Mason/Alex he is a man I'd want in my corner. I can't wait to see what Emily Macintyre comes out with next!

Just when I though Emily couldn’t hit me in my feels anymore with her books, she went and did just that. She took me on an emotional rollercoaster, one that I’ve still not quite recovered from since finishing this book. Beneath the Surface is the story we’ve been waiting for since the very beginning. This is easily her best work yet and what a way to end the Sugarlake series.
There are a thousand different things to feel and I don’t know which one to grasp onto, so I surrender to all of them instead.- Lily
Lily and Masons story is one of the most raw and real stories I’ve ever read. Drugs, manipulative parents, hiding and running from your past, and starting over all are what ultimately bring Lily and Mason together. It wasn’t suppose to happen, it was never the intention for the Mason to fall in love with Lily but he does. And Lily, she is busy taking care of her son and working at a diner in town where you go to hide. The last thing on her mind is falling in love with someone but she does. But secrets are kept, threats are made, and all good things must come to end when it comes to keeping those you love safe.

The Best One of the Series
She was right telling you not to look up the Trigger warnings, and I'm glad I did not, because I would not have read it. Which would have been a shame, because it was the best book of the series.

I love nothing more than a book that makes me FEEL something and Emily has hit that mark with every book in this series.
As I've said I think in every review, EM writes the most beautifully flawed characters I've ever read. She lays them wide open for you to see all of their faults and their flaws, and then she pulls you into their soul and you cannot help but fall in love with them, despite their imperfections. Or maybe because of them.
This book though. Lily and Mason. Both extremely flawed. Both thinking they are not deserving of love. Both needing love more than they realize. Not letting people in. But something changes when they meet.
Watching them dance around their relationship as neither of them quite knew what to make of what was happening. Their banter was perfection. There was humor despite the darkness and the sadness. Watching Mason fall in love, not only with Lily but with little Chase, was everything!
A sad, raw, real story that shows you people can change. Love is an option despite your past. Also, the interaction of all of the Sugarlake Gang shows you family doesn't always mean blood. Those people - all of them - are FAMILY!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! 15/10 STARS 3.5/5 ON THE SPICE
This is the fourth and final book in the Sugarlake Series. It can be read as a standalone but to get the full experience, you should definitely read books 1-3 first.
**CHECK TRIGGER WARNINGS IF NEEDED**
Anyone who has read the series from the beginning knows we have been waiting for Lilys story since the first book. And damn, did Emily deliver. Lily is a broken woman on the run just trying to survive and make a new life for herself. A PI is hired to find her and when he does there is an instant attraction on his part. From there the story moves quickly. You fall in love, your heart gets broken, you're taken a ride that quite literally makes your head spin, but I promise the end result IS SO DAMN WORTH IT! This book wrecked me in ways I wasn't ready for. I cried hard in the middle of the story and then again at the end because I knew this world has now been concluded. As always Emily did not disappoint, she gave us the closure we so desperately needed for not only Lily, but for everyone in the series.
Y'all, I always said that Beneath the Stands was my favorite, well, I now have a new one. This book was EVERYTHING I expected it to be but also, so much MORE. Emily destroyed me in the best possible way. I fell in love with her writing style almost immediately when reading Beneath the Stars and then when I realized her story lines involved mental health issues, growth and healing... let's just say I then fell in love with her.
Read the series, thank me later. You will not be dissapointed!

THIS FREAKING BOOK. Absolutely beautiful & heart wrenching every step of the way. I have been impatiently waiting for Lily’s story since book one of this series & Emily did not disappoint! I fell IN LOVE with Mason & Lily. Their relationship is so raw & real that it gave me all the emotions. This is one of those books that you connect with on a deeper level. We get to experience everything Lily went through & where exactly she’s been all this time away from home & the people who love her. There were so many plot twists I didn’t see coming that I was OBSESSED with! This is a very intense story, it’s one with broken souls, filled with scars & some very particular spicy preferences. I can’t say enough good things about Lily & Mason’s story - I mean just wow. If you are someone who doesn’t have any triggers, go into this book blind, you will thank me later. Emily did such a beautiful job making this book everything it should have been. It’s not an easy simple love story, it takes a lot of work for their HEA but man is it worth the journey. I also loved how we get a wrap up for all the other characters in this series as well, it was the cutest thing ever! I can’t say enough good things about this book - a must read!!
