A book that really shows the daily torment in the second world war. Unlike Soldaat van Oranje, which is more of a hero story (even though it's true), this story reflects on the life in the more rural parts of the Netherlands during the war, and shows the troubles of the more average Dutch person. A very interesting read!!

This is a very slim novel but not necessarily a quick read. It serves as a good look at war from a different perspective and one that most readers miss out on. The story deals with an occupied town rather than a story taking place within a camp so this makes it easier (ie less violent) than many other war books. Translated from a classic in the Netherlands, students may have difficulty with the word choices and flow of the sentences but once they read a few pages it should begin to get easier. This would be a good choice for male readers who often are reluctant to read Anne Frank and would serve as a good compliment to that reading selection.

Oorlogswinter (in Dutch)
3 star = liked it.
As intermediate Dutch learner, I found this book to be both easy and interesting to read. The lead up to death of Ben Van Hierden was very contrived. The author wanted the villain to be dead but at the same time wanted no blood on the hands of the heroes. Other-wise the plot was brilliant.

“There are horrors in every war...every nation has brutally murdered and tortured in times of war, in ways that would seem unimaginable in peacetime. So don’t be fooled, Michiel, by the romance of war, heroism, sacrifice, excitement, adventure. War means injuries, grief, torture, imprisonment, hunger, hardship, injustice. There’s nothing romantic about it.”
.
Winter in Wartime is a captivating and inspiring adventure story based on the author’s own experiences as a child in Holland.
.
It’s set during the Second World War, when the Netherlands was occupied by the Nazis, and it focuses on a particularly harsh, devastating winter when due to scarcity of food, many people had to boil tulip bulbs for consumption.
.
When teenage Michiel is asked to help a wounded British spitfire pilot, he risks all in joining the resistance against the Nazis. It’s a well written novel about courage, empathy and resilience in the face of danger, and is a great lesson and reminder not to be complacent about freedom, peace and privileges. It is a young adult book, but I think it has universal appeal for its charm, humour and twisty plot.

Thank you very much for the review copy @pushkin_press .
