There's no bitch on earth like a mother frightened for her kids.

WOW. I had no idea I would love Dolores Claiborne, the book and the character, so much.

This is Dolores' confession. It's a long, rambling, she'll get to that part when she gets to that part, Andy, confession with no chapter breaks, no other points of view, and no concern whether you believe her or not because this is the way it happened.

I could not get enough of her story.

description
(This is me reading this book. Although I'm not a bunny. Clearly.)

From the recollection of her years with Joe (what a worthless pile of turds that guy turned out to be) to her relationship with "that bitch Vera Donovan" (possibly the very best kind of bitch one could be) to displays of her strong work ethic and even stronger love for her children (my heart hurt), I was enthralled.

What would I have done in her place? What would I have done had I known her? Are all sins really sins? Are some forgivable?

Time's a reach, too, you know, just like the one that lies between the islands and the mainland, but the only ferry that can cross it is memory, and that's like a ghost-ship--if you want it to disappear, after awhile it will.

Definitely planning on tracking the movie down, as I hadn't even heard of it before. I know, I know...I'm not sure which rock I've been living under either.

The complete lack of structure to this novel meant we didn't get off to a good start, however ultimately this just wasn't for me. It was long despite only being 304 pages, it was meandering, and the writing style, whilst adding character to the novel, did make returning to the story jarring. I enjoyed Vera and Dolores's relationship, but doubt I'll be returning back to a King anytime soon!

Really hard to decide on a 5 or a high 4 for this one. What a book though. So far it's my 3rd favourite from King and it's due to the fear and also laughter it can conjure. Dolores is a great protagonist and the book being written in such an interesting structure definitely works to its advantage. I love Vera too and it's heartbreaking really, never thought I'd be so upset by her after how she begins. Repetition of action and scenery works really well to create an atmosphere, also Joe's death is a perpetual reminisce in my mind - same as Selena's awful treatment received. Selena's rape and allurement case is extremely disgusting I can't stand Joe and I didn't feel sad for him in any way.

I didn't really end up feeling a whole lot about this book either way. I started off hating its slow, nothing-happening plot and its constant potty humor. Things finally ramped up in the second half and got interesting, then it was over.
The main character was...unfortunately kind of annoying? I know that was sort of the point, but I didn't really care if she got caught or not. Also, I know this was supposed to be a kind of companion novel to Gerald's Game, but King really overdoes it with certain plot points that I won't give away because of spoilers. Let's just say it seems like he hit a bit of a creativity slump at this point in his career because certain scenes in this novel are copied and pasted to and from other books of his.

This might be the best King book I've read (out of 30 so far).
