My biggest problem with this whole thing: Maria Hill would never say "I need you back, Natasha. I'm man enough to admit it." (Come on. Seriously?)

I have really mixed feelings about this one. I really liked the flashbacks in issues 16, 19, and 20, but the rest were just...meh.

This volume was just as good as the second, although I was hoping it'd be much better, but I'm not complaining. I wasn't struggling as much with trying to understand the story line in this one which I'm quite grateful for, however the ending was either a bit anticlimactic, felt rushed, and/ or I understood a bit less than I thought I did. Altogether, I'm very pleased this was my very first Black Widow comic and won't be stopping with this one.

This run is amazing. The story is good but the art is better!

I'm really sad that this was the last volume of this run, I will miss this beautiful art so much! I have to say just in terms of story I didn't enjoy the first part of this volume to much... All these things going on with CHAOS were just a bit confusing... Like, why is Nat the only one who can stop them? The last two issues were just heartbreaking though, I loved to see a bit of Nats past when she was a child and also to see probably the thing she regrets the most. The story gets really dark. We really get to understand her a lot better in this and she is such a complex, interesting, strong character and we really get to see this here... She is kind of the hero and the villain at the same time and I thought it was really well done, I got really emotional. And once again, the art is simply BEAUTIFUL.

For the most part, I wasn't really impressed with this run. Natasha hemming and hawing about how alone she is and how no one understands her felt oddly childish. To the point where I felt a little embarrassed by it.

I know enough about Natasha's past to know that she did a lot of fucked up shit and feels the need to atone, but it always rang hollow.

Until this volume.

This had everything I wanted in the first two volumes of this run. The pain Natasha felt was palpable and beautiful written. The entire Cuba flashback was perfect and heartbreaking.

Noto's art was expressive and amazing, as always.

It kinda hurt to watch a possible future with Nat and a certain someone knowing the entire time during his run, he didn't think of her once and was heavily involved with someone else. Ouch.

Either way, this was a delightful close to an otherwise pretty bland run.

A worthy finish to Edmonson and Noto's run, this one incorporates the "Time Runs Out" crossover not only without letting it impact the story, but really using it to enrich the narrative they already had going. Natasha gets more depth, just when you thought that might be impossible. The ending feels a little disjointed and odd, and the transitions are a little jarring, but overall, this is a great Black Widow story.

Oh man how lucky are we to be alive during this particular Black Widow era.

Black Widow Vol 3: Last Days written by Nathan Edmondson and illustrated by Phil Noto is the final volume of the Black Widow sequence that ended just before Secret Wars. It contains issues #13–20 of the 2014 Black Widow run with no need for random extra issues to bad out the volume (yay). I have previously read and reviewed volumes 1 and 2.

This volume of Black Widow had a lot of flashbacks. On the one hand, they were interesting because we got to learn more about her past, but on the other hand, they didn't necessarily move the main story forward. The main story being the one that the first two volumes were leading up to: Black Widow versus Chaos. Given how much trouble Chaos caused earlier on, especially in the first two volumes, I did feel that the final confrontation with a representative of Chaos was over too quickly and too easily. Not to mention that I wouldn't've minded a bit more explanation of the weird stuff going on with Chaos anyway (but there was a hint that we might be seeing more of that later, I suppose...).

I didn't dislike this volume, but it didn't grab me as much as the earlier ones. I ended up reading over a much longer period of time than I usually do, almost an issue at a time, until I got to the last few. There was also much less of an actual "Last Days" storyline, especially when compared with Ms Marvel's and Silk's corresponding volume and issue. Which isn't a bad thing, and probably makes sense given that Black Widow ended the earliest before Secret Wars, but was a bit of a surprise.

I recommend this volume to fans of Black Widow. I didn't love it — the art is still nice though — but I do intend to keep reading Black Widow in the future (is there a post-Secret Wars version? I'm not actually sure). Last Days does conclude the stories started in the earlier volumes and gives us more back story on the character. And we get to see the cat again. (Superheroes with cats are the best, as we all know.)

4 / 5 stars

2.5 * for me. The earlier issues really captured me with Nat's tortured history and her desire to be something better. I almost feel like the creative team was ramping up for a longer run when they got word that there was an imminent cutoff date. Why else would this last few issues feel so rushed and incomplete when the rest was so beautifully paced? Whatever the reason, this volume tried to do way too much. There was Nat's ugly history, which was shown in a pretty heavy-handed way, there was a tour through some of her relationship history, also sort of clumsily done, there was a hurried resolution to the action with Chaos, and then there was a race through "what's next for Natasha" which was ultimately really unclear. Who was she saving and from what? The problem is, this was so scattered and hurried that I don't care very much. I lost that lovely thread, which is terribly disappointing.
