They go to war with clear ideals, they know the motives. They believe in what they do and don't question the reasons. And in the blink of an eye, their life changes and they find themselves in a place where nightmares come true, where time is lost and freedom is a vague and distant memory.
A trauma that will bind Scottie and Riggs, making them question every believed they had until that moment. After being rescued, Scottie goes back to her husband and her son. Her plan seems simple: to pick up her relationship where she left off before being deployed and to be the mom she always was. But soon she will find that, maybe, you don't escape the war. That perfection doesn't exist and that what it used to be might not be enough anymore.
As she writes to Riggs, "I thought the nightmare was over when they pulled us from that hole in the ground, but nothing could have prepared me for the war I'd face at home."

What a gamut of emotions. It went from having me sad, to annoyed at Briggs, to worried and sad, to happy, back to sad, bittersweet happy. I could not put this book down. So well written. Loved the angsty emotional ride.
Sometimes I think it's unfair that you can only rate a book up to 5 stars.
There are times when a book captures you heart, mind and soul... grips you so tight that all you can do is hold on tight and hang on for the ride. This was Heartbreak Warfare.
The authors both expressed that this book is "a love letter to the American soldier." Boy is it ever. At its core, it's a romance, but the story depicted within these pages has an all-consuming, life-changing feel that makes you appreciate the efforts of our military heroes.
For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I'd rather leave out the plot details. Honestly, I went into this story with nothing more than the blurb and the impact hit me square in the feels. It's been a long while since I've had a book make me feel so immensely that it had me in tears during multiple occasions as I read. The intensity of certain scenes was so profound that I literally had to pause for a moment to catch my breath. My heart was pounding so hard. I needed a minute.
The effort to achieve such authentic storytelling during certain parts of this book was evident and added so much to this story. It really opened my mind and gave me a greater appreciation for the valiant efforts of the men and women in our military.
There may be people who are concerned about a love triangle or cheating in this story. Let me assure you, this story is unlike any other I have read, and if those tropes are a hard no for you, I would still give Heartbreak Warfare a chance. The way these authors portray the relationships in this story, you will understand why I suggest opening your mind a bit. I promise.
When I reflect on the story and the intensity of the feelings I had while reading, it made me feel as deeply as I did while reading Bright Side by Kim Holden, but for a completely different reason. The only reason I make this comparison is to show how great the impact it made on my heart. The stories are totally different, completely night and day from one another, but the emotions the authors bring out felt just as bold and intense.
If you are a lover of books that touch you in your soul and keep you living in their world long after you're finished reading, you MUST pick up Heartbreak Warfare immediately. It's worth every beat of your racing heart, tear sliding down your cheek and smile that crosses your face.

I live for the books that hurt you and heal you all at the same time. The ones that test you, pull out the tears, the heartache — make you question normal situations while also leaving their mark on you. Those are the books that truly make reading worthwhile. They are the books you don’t ever forget. And this was one of them.
I knew to go in expecting high emotions. What I didn’t know was how difficult and emotional nearly every word and page would be. I felt challenged by this story and I came out the other side feeling wholly different.
Katy is a badass soldier and a fierce mother. She’s also a loving wife. But when faced with war, distance from her family, and an arrestingly handsome so grunt soldier, all while held captive, perspectives change. You change. And Katy didn’t return home the same woman she left as.
Kate Stewart and Heather Orgeron wrote such a beautifully devastating and tragic story that I won’t ever forget.
TW: this book is graphic and at times difficult to read. Be aware and enjoy.

This book. THIS MOTHER FREAKING BOOK. So many emotions. Protect your hearts, readers, as they may shatter a little. [EmOtIoNaL DaMaGe.. For real]. The first part of this story carries you through a physical war in Baghdad. The rest of the story will carry you through psychological and emotional warfare following such trauma. It took a while to process what Katy and Briggs went through and how that affected their civilian relationships moving forward. To tell you I was so happy to have done this as a buddy read would be an understatement. I needed someone to feel the same pain I was in while navigating this story.
It is RAW, DARK, and GRITTY. Full of all of the angst with the love triangle we ultimately end up with between Katy, Gavin, and Briggs.
“I am two different women, living in two separate worlds, in love with two different soldiers. In the haze that’s now my life, clarity is all I pray for.”
Both men are wonderful in their own right and Katy really brought us through the inner turmoil she was faced with…and I was NOT okay. I will say the epilogue was satisfying and helped to cohesively tie up the storyline without feeling too overdone. Kudos and many thanks to Kate Stewar and Heather Orgeron for this masterpiece!

6+ Stars! My first book of 2019, and I feel gutted and pieced back together again. This book captivated my heart and had me torn in two up until the very last words. I loved it.

4 stars because it made me feel all the feels. Angry with the FMC because even though she frequently brought up how much she loved her husband, she switched to Briggs awfully fast. Gavin and Noah deserved better as she (what I thought) barely tried to heal herself after the trauma. She was fixated on the romanticized thoughts of Briggs while they were held in the bunker together. Then the outright cheating after what felt like a turning point in the book made me upset. Is it the best I’ve ever read? No. But it was entertaining and that’s the whole point of reading
You think you know what emotional pain is? If you haven't read this book, you have no idea! None! The beauty and complexity of this love story comes with so much heartache!!! I was left a sobbing mess afer finishing this book. My heart feels torn apart, ripped to tiny little bits and then trampled on. Am I being a tad overdrmatic?? No, I'm really not. Go read this and then come back and tell me how you feel.
I won't summarize this book for you. Just go in blind. This blurb also is bloody brilliant and gives nothing away which I loved. I was not expecting this story. This is a military romance that makes you appreciate the men and women who serve even more. You have no choice but to honor and respect the sacrifices they make for their country. Some of the scenes of war are difficult to read and I had to close my eyes and take a break sometimes. It was really really hard to go through those scenes but it was raw and honest and brings to light the reality of war and the trauma that soldiers go through. In this story our soldier goes into war one person and returns home another and this change affects everyone and everything.
Now for the romance! How do I begin to describe this??!! There is so much passion and lust and yes, there is true love! There is longing and hunger and an ache to be with someone so badly that you risk everything in your life to be with that person. These authors created such vulnerable, loveable characters that you can't help but FEEL EVERYTHING with them and I NEEDED them to find their happily ever after.
Gah!! I was so torn with how I felt with the turn of events. I'm still not sure if I liked how this ended!! I'm left broken and traumatized and I now have one of the worst book hangovers. This book will make you HURT! There is an epilogue that helps the hurt a little... very little... LOL. Regardless, this is a TOP READ OF 2018! The level of emotions this brought out of me and the fact that I'm still obsessed with these charcaters days after reading this, speaks to the AMAZINGNESS that is this book! You do not want to miss out on this experience!
