This book started out really slow and I was considering not finishing it, but it really picked up at the 50% mark and I couldn't put it down! I love me a tall dark brooding mysterious conflicted love interest
I enjoyed this book. It definitely made me want to instantly binge the whole series. If you love a fantasy book about someone growing into both their magical and personal strength, this book is for you. It has all the elements I love with a good YA, including a slow burn romance. It did, as many reviewers have said, have a lot taken from Avatar the Last Airbender, and it lacked worldbuilding. There's also some grammatical and editing errors. Overall, I really liked it, enough that I right away bought the box set.

Read in 2022, enjoyed this a lot! Very interesting system so far, and the narrator is doing a great job. I can tell it will be a complex series, in a good way.
Basic and good
I liked this book. It was written in a very simple style and the characters are fairly easy to read but I loved the story and the sexual tension. I'm still not sold on if the prince (not Aldrick) is good or not, or if he was just manipulating Vhalla but I guess I'll find out in the next books. I love the "dark prince" character in Aldrick. I want more of him. And they just need to make out already...

3.5 stars, rounded up.
This book was enjoyable. It is a very standard YA fantasy book and didn't really feel too standout. However, I do think the plot and characters will develop for future books, so I'm interested to continue. This had a lot of your typical tropes - a nobody who is mostly invisible discovers she has abilities, finds herself an attractive prince who she bonds with, and gets caught up in political unrest.
I think we should all take a moment to appreciate that our MMC is, in fact, NOT a shadow daddy. All of the magic, at least so far, is very elemental (like so many other stories) BUT he does not have shadow abilities. Honestly, I think that deserves a few stars all on it's own.

Got about halfway. It was good, but just couldn't keep my attention. I felt like the story was not going anywhere new. I really liked the premise. I will possibly pick it up and finish another time

This was an audible purchase for me, and I loved this world building, I am lukewarm on the narrator, but I will keep listening.
This is one of those books/series I believe I’ll end up buying in paper!
I am still learning the differences in fantasy, this has magic but no monsters, so in my head that is a “low fantasy”, if I’m wrong, I am sorry.
This is a cliffy, but the series is complete, I believe (I HOPE!!)

Elise Kova has to be my favorite author now. Her writing both breaks my heart and fixes it again and this book was no different.
In my opinion this was my perfect fantasy.
I loved it I have no other words!
