It was a good book, I wouldn't have bought it though (my partner bought it for me)
I like the idea of mindfulness and I think she did a fab job of explaining everything in lame terms and backing everything up with scientific studies. But mindfulness is just not something I can do

I personally took a lot from the book. I questioned it slightly at the beginning knowing that Ruby is in fact a comedian, writing a book about mental health. She has experienced depression like myself, and being able to open up and be honest about the mental health issue is great. I love that it touches on some of the science behind it, without being too textbook.

I know, classic me, it’s a 4 star rating again! I just can’t commit to the full 5 ok? I’m sorry!

It was a rocky start, I found myself wondering where Wax was going with what appeared to be a fairly muddled concoction of personal experiences and psychology textbook style writing. As I read on it made more and more sense. Wax presents some truly eye-opening opinions on the mind, mental health and mindfulness in her book, with some genius self-care ideas that actually don’t seem super daunting to put into place and be able to call part of your routine!

Containing so many anecdotes from her own experiences, Wax has written a genuinely relatable account of her own experiences of poor mental health, negative thought patterns and how she approached to combat them, with some degree of success.

This book is a good reminder (I found) to those with mental health struggles that it’s not your fault, it’s just science! And there are ways to combat this cruel science with mindfulness and awareness activities.

Largely entertaining, relatable and enlightening.

I wish I had read this 10 years ago, I would have liked having Ruby's (metaphorical) hand to hold while I took my first steps into adulthood and into discovering mindfulness and meditation. Still, better late than never. I appreciate the way Ruby's wacky brain works, her humour, how she's broken everything down to ease the reader in to it, her honesty, and that she's cited plenty of studies for those of us who just can't quite believe anything that doesn't come backed up by empirical evidence. GO RUBY.

Ruby Wax's scatter-gun approach to humour sometimes really hits the mark. What I didn't know was that since leaving her TV career she achieved a master's degree in mindfulness based cognitive therapy a at Oxford University. The first half of the book was a great insight into the effects of the brain on the mind, the latter half went a bit self-help unfortunately.

Best 'get to know yourself' book I've ever read. I would recommend it to absolutely everybody, especially those who have battled with/are battling with/know people who battle with depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses. It is insightful, rational, funny, recognisable, helpful and just plain interesting. So, put this on your to-read-list for 2017!

Read slowly and with a pencil in hand. Yet to translate it into post it notes about life and the human brain. As per usual, great writing and wit from Mrs Wax. No news re mindfulness for me, but it’s a topic that is always worth a revisit.

The chapters about neuroscience and mindfulness were well written and informative. The first couple of chapters however did not resonate with me.

Having been suffering with depression for the past year, I have begun looking for other ways to deal with my ruminating negative thoughts and those stressful times that left me in a weeping wreck in work meetings (has actually happened once I think scared me supervisors). Mindfulness has been suggested to me from various sources and up till now I have put of practising it as "have not had enough time".

This book is an awesome mix of the scientific background which causes our brain to become our enemy and Ruby's story of her depression. It is one of those books that show you that the crazy emotions and thoughts you are having are not that unusual and you not alone. I am going to look into a 8 week mindfulness course and until then make time everyday to try and be mindful. One thing that Ruby suggests is just to take 5 seconds every few hours to be truly in the moment and this will be great during those days where I am busy and struggle to fit everything into my day.

I am going to preach the merit of this book to everyone I meet!
