The Good House

Realistic depiction of an alcoholic's life. Funny, but not funny at the same time. I suppose that is called dark humor.

Hildy is irresistibly REAL, capricious, and likable all in one. A painfully funny but very original story about a 60-something alcoholic, with a gay ex-husband, and a touch of psychic abilities. Exceptional writing allows Hildy’s voice to lead us along an honest portrayal of how we judge one-another by the homes we live in, the partners we choose, and the addictions we have. Brilliant novel.

This is an absorbing story of salvaging the broken in its many forms, a horse, a house, a boat, a person. Enthralling subplots mesh together in this story of purpose and value and humanity as a realtor conducts her business in a small town on the Massachusetts coast. Her retinue of clients, family, and long-time friends populate a story of facing harsh realities, then learning coping skills to live on. It is a quiet celebration of humanity that leaves the reader with a hopeful spirit.

This is an engrossing story, well-crafted, and absolutely engaging.

Excellent book. I just loved how well she portrayed the woman in denial of her alcoholism. I was engaged in all the characters and how Hildy thought everyone had slighted her.

3.5 ⭐️ (Audio via library) A good story that kept me up late to finish it on the same day I began listening to it (never happens). The main character is an alcoholic realtor in a small town where she’s lived her whole life. We meet many other interesting characters and also have the layers of their and her life and history slowly revealed throughout the story. Poignant and yet very frustrating-to-watch an alcoholic justify her behaviors and then walk through the results of poor decisions made over and over. There was also a bit of a mystery element which I enjoyed.

I really enjoyed this book - what fun! Hilde Goode is a fascinating and unreliable narrator - a realtor on the brink of falling apart, and seems to have no idea she is. As a realtor, Hilde is the perfect character to give us a sense of an old New England town - and the setting is a central part of this novel. I found the characters interesting and believable - all people I could imagine meeting (and many of whom I really want to meet!). I really was sad when the book ended.

This is one of those books I think I could only “read” in the format of an audiobook. The story of a 60 year old real estate agent in New England who has a bit of a drinking problem. Though she’ll try to convince you otherwise...😏The narrator’s voice was perfect and kept the listener engaged as you learned the stories and gossip of the town. A light but sometimes sad read. A good palette cleanser book in my opinion! Liked it, but didn’t love it.
