As you can see, I finished it in a day. I was really nervous because of the low reviews. However, King surprised me with a feel good story-something I haven’t read from him yet. I didn’t believe that the story was slow at all. However, I am biased since I am a “lesbean”. Over the years, it’s been discussed if King is homophobic or not. I feel like he did a good job putting into perspective how being gay in a small, “rear view mirror town” is. It’s obviously not his best work in terms of horror, character/world development, or plot, but it felt like a breath of fresh air. Overall, I thought it was sweet and enjoyable.

Good read

Easy and quick read in the Stephen King style I've loved for decades. A bit like "Thinner" but refreshingly different.

Intrigue and lesbians and character growth, what more can I ask for?

A very interesting novella (?). It doesn't get too bogged down in minor details, but contains a very interesting story. I found the lack of an explanation for the main character's ailment more compelling than a reasoned explanation. Good stuff, quick one day read.

This is a short book of 132 pages which I pretty much finished in a day. It's not one of Kings most popular books and I believe it's because it was marketed as a horror book when it's not. I already knew this when I picked it up, my favourite booktuber had given five stars and so I had to check it out. Scott is an easily likeable character, and it was so charming to read about his journey through the mysterious weight loss and wanting to create a relationship with his neighbours. I can't believe that so much was packed and developed in such a small book, I wasn't bored at all! It was wonderful to see Deirdre's walls come down and see the beginnings of a great friendship. There is also a little nod to an event that happens in other of Stephen Kings short stories. This was such a feel good novel and it's hard to pick out any flaws. For me this is a strong 4.5 stars!

More of a short story than a novella. Nothing remarkable but appreciated the central metaphor and the fittingly light touch with which he approached the topic.

This was not your average Stephen King novel. It’s a slim little small-town story, more of a mysterious and magical novella with worthwhile messages: get over biases, heal resentments, learn to lean into kindness & listen to inner integrity. The tale has a mystical, almost supernatural element that is almost beside the point; what’s really at play is getting past rudeness, incivility, prejudice, divisiveness, hatred. Knowing King’s politics from Twitter, we can infer who his lessons are aimed at, but in today’s world, we can all stand to expand our consciousness. Recommend

3.5 really. It wasn't fantastic but I did enjoy it.

Did not expect to like this as much as I did, it was so entertaining and so good, and the ending really got to me

Scott is losing weight, though his outward appearance remains the same. He's losing at a rate of 1-2 pounds per day, he's calculates that 0 pounds will be sometime in March.

Honestly, I want to know about what happens after, and why it happened at all, more than the lead up to 0 day.

This version also includes a short story called Laurie, about an older man who's sister gifts him a puppy after his wife's death. Cute and sad.
