Incoherent and annoying, DNF. Overly descriptive and constantly referencing itself, it’s hard to get through even a page without mentally removing entire sentences that don’t need to be there. You’re probably reminded once per page that this world is violent, or any angel is some kind of death machine, etc. etc.

Definitely liked this book better then Angels' Blood, the first in the series! That kinda surprises me because for much of the book I felt like I was waiting for something to happen.

There is a lot of time spent on Elena's transformation and training to prepare herself for Lijuan's ball. I found myself more then halfway through and STILL they hadn't even LEFT to attend this freaking thing! I will say that once they make the trek to China for the shindig...shit gets REAL. Phenomenal ending! Really sucked me in and built on everything that came before it.

I think the strongest aspect of this story and really, what made me fine with so much build-up was Raphael. SO MUCH HIM. He has grown on me like the sexiest kind of moss in existence. I love the interaction between Elena and Raphael. I love how they are grown up and accepting of their love and relationship. No big Mis, no "I don't need you to do things!", just love and devotion and sexy times.

Excited to keep on with this series and interested to find out more about every single character in this world.

So this book is a 3.5 - I think the writing is good, and I liked this books storyline better. I do Think the story is better in this book, than the first, but it is also more possessive and annoying. This book seems close to Twilight. Like this perfect, sexy, strong, controlling, dangerous man is keeping this mortal woman alive from people that want to hurt them. Elena is much more of the warrior than Bella, but Still. My main issue is that Raphael is insanely possessive. He even says, “I’m never letting her leave, even if she wants too.” I was like- ok psycho pants. It’s just not a healthy relationship.

Also, I figured out the “gift” earlier on. I just wasn’t surprised and it all seemed to be pretty fast in ending. Also if I counted the times he reached around to grab her breast- I could make it a drinking game.

This book is fine. I’d still recommend Sarah J. Maas’ books more.

It's taken me so long to get truly started on this series for no real reason. i can't believe it's taken me so long since I love Nalini Singh's writing. This was a great book and I love Elena and Raphael together. I adore the fact that she's not a pushover. He's an archangel and is so ridiculously powerful and overbearing. But he doesn't intimidate her and she's not going to let him take over the entirety of her life. They're going to have a partnership whether he wants it or not.

Elena's still newly made into an angel and she's still weak. She has a lot to figure out to get her new body functioning at the level she had as a hunter. Her hunter powers are still there and he needs to get her body up to full power. Raphael knows Elena is his weakness. His love for her makes him that little bit more human. Making sure she can protect herself is paramount. Of course danger is already knocking. Someone's very clearly threatening Elena and killing angels and vampires in the Retreat making it clear who the real target is.

This is a great novel and builds on Elena and Raphael's relationship while showing a lot more of the angels world. Thinking are violent and dangerous with all of the power they all have. The threat is real and coming from more than one direction. I can't wait to read more in this series.

Loved it haven't stopped reading. Loved learning about Elena's past and her learning to be an angel and the politics of the Cadre.

Even better than the first one!
