2nd read: Okay, the ending was cleared up a little for me, but EVERYTHING ELSE was just so weak. Raphael was at his worst. Elena was just herself and that's fine?? But I wanted MORE. More of everything. I hate how empty this book felt of anything useful besides set up for the later books (which, I will note, have not been paid off fully...I need something conclusive about Lijuan. Please. I'm begging you.)

1st read: Did they just blow up Beijing? Is Lijuan dead? This ending was so unclear. However, biggest props to Elena for literally killing her demons. I'm proud of her. I'm not sure I liked the build up to it, but the execution (pun intended) was flawless. I think I'm going to keep reading this series, and continue to hope it gets better. There's so much good that could just use a little bit more nurturing to become the awesome it has the potential to be.

I continued the series because the first book, though silly, was a good time. The second book just draaaaaaags though. The campiness I found endearing in the last book became just annoying here.

This is where I make my exit with the Guild Hunters series.

The pacing is wayyyy off--I wish Singh would learn how to reveal important plot points. There was too much repetition with the character arcs; the book seemed stagnant, though a reveal should have moved the book along. The conversations of the book were also off--I sometimes was confused about a reference a character would make and often, I did not understand it at all.

However, Singh's save and grace is her ability to create such fun, awesome characters and a world that is intriguing. These facets of the novel bound the book together and made me keep on reading.

3.5⭐

I didn't love this one quite as much as book 1 but I'm still really loving this series. Overall this one just dragged a little. The majority of this book is Elena training and learning the inner workings of the angelic politics. While I that interesting, I did struggle to keep the dozens of characters straight (I still don't have a solid grasp of who everyone is and how they're related). But Nalini Singh's writing is so captivating that I still never wanted to put this down despite there being minimal action. I'm enjoying watching the main relationship progress and I'm excited to see how it evolves over the next few books (I've heard it just keeps getting better!).
I just didn't love how this entire book felt like it was building up to this big moment/face off and the entire thing was over in about 20 pages. I wish there had been a little less build up, and a little more time spent on big reveal and battle.

Books 3 & 4 are on my February TBR and I can't wait to start them!

So much fun!

Love a book 2 that opens the world up. Sexy, wondrous and plenty creepy. I’m all in

The overarching plot is starting now! It’s weird how much I forgot from these first few books - I guess I don’t reread these earlier ones as much as I thought!

What I particularly like about this book, especially over the first book, is the deepening of Raphael character’s growth. By the end of the first book, I’m not completely sold on his feelings for Elena; by the end of this book, I’m completely sold! We, also, of course, get to see more of the Seven, which I really like. In fact, though Dimitri isn’t my favorite - and neither is his book - I’m particularly looking forward to a reread of that one for some reason.

4 stars = I liked it. The relationship between the characters doesn’t feel forced, but evolving naturally, even within a short period of time. I look forward to the next one.

Once again I want to thank character development for existing. After reading the first two chapters, I wasn't sure if I would ever love Raphael, but now I can say I LOVE him.

This book was even better than the first one for me. Now that we know this world and characters, the stakes feel higher and we are able to have a much deeper plot, which I appreciate.

I was kind of upset in the first book because I felt like the fell for each other a bit too fast. This book gave me what I was missing tho. We get to see Raphael and Elena share their secrets, learn the stories and get to know the person they fell for.

One thing I LOVED about this book is that even tho Elena didn't know anything about the angel world and was super weak after her accident, not once did Raphael see her as weak or underestimate her. And when others would hint at that he would be like "her mistake is thinking my Elena can't hold her own".

I really look forward to reading the next books!

Listen, did I think it was as good as the first book..... No. That being said I enjoyed the hell out of it and will definitely be continuing with the series.
