I think I went into this book with the wrong expectations. I thought it would be a fast past, slow burn romantasy, when it’s more fantasy (absolutely no romance in this book, but I get that it’s coming in the next ones). I found the pacing quite odd, a lot happened while at the same time nothing happened at all? First few chapters - action packed. Middle of the book? Nothing happened what so ever. Last few chapters? Action again.
I liked Suri for the most part. I love that she’s flawed, impulsive and reckless even when her life is on the line. She’s greedy, and definitely morally grey, which I really appreciate in an FMC.

I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review
Where do I even start...
I enjoyed this book so much because the enemies are actual enemies that want to kill each other, and it is not mild dislike, or like someone called it “unrequited” enemies, where one has to ask themselves if one of those characters is aware of the fact they're enemies.
The main character is apparently supposed to be unlikeable, and I don't know what it says about me because I found Suri likeable, maybe even relatable at times.
I also enjoyed that the slow-burn was actually slow. You could tell something was there, but... was it, really? The romance is also a subplot, which is another thing I liked.
There were twists and turns I didn't see coming, and I was surprised by some turn of events more than once. At one point, I was just waiting for one scene to take a turn because surely the author wouldn't do that. Spoiler alert: she would.
Overall, I loved this book, and I can't wait for the next one.

This book was beautifully written.
It gave me early Cinderella vibes with a Throne of Glass twist.
I absolutely love a badass FMC, and Suri was no exception, a pickpocket with a bad habit of getting into bad situations, wrong place, wrong time kinda thing.
The MMC is a morally grey shadow daddy, and when he turned round and called her 'little thief' I was hooked on him.
She gets caught and winds up punished but with a shot at redemption, but there are lots of twists and turns that will steal your heart and soul forever..
I really enjoy a fantasy adventure, so give it a go guys, it's full of under the surface 'sexual tension', drama, and shadow daddy deliciousness.
4 gorgeous stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was so good. Characters that feel authentic and not overly dramatic. Plot was captivating. Romance is sloooooooow sloooooooow burn. I would highly recommend this to someone looking for a fantasy romance that is leaning more towards romantic fantasy and with solid writing that isn't fluffy or dramatic or cringy. While that can be fun as a palette cleanser, sometimes it all just gets a bit too repetitive.
Rage is ever-consuming, powerful and destructive. Especially, in desperation.
Let’s get on with it! The world-building was amazing to follow. The world was so rich in history and lore, which we find out most of them alongside our FMC. It was easy to understand while still feeling complex, so much room to be fleshed out in the upcoming sequels!
The plot had a lot of twists and turns. From our FMC to the characters around her. It made for a very fun, especially action-packed (the author made use of some wonderful imagery that helped make the scenes feel more vivid, particularly in these fighting/action scenes), read. There’s so much foreshadowing and hints alluding to certain plot points but I can’t wait to read the next book to find out!
Suri our pickpocket. The moment I met her, I was empathetic. To her situation, to the decisions she’s made because of it, and for her longing. But she’s strong-willed, won’t back down from a challenge, and will definitely not forget her revenge. She’s also quite clever and quick-witted, knowing how to act and what to say to lengthen her survivability.
There’s romance here and there, I’d spoil, but I also want to keep the new readers on their toes. It is a slow, slow-burn, which I wholeheartedly enjoyed. All I can tell is, this would be worth it.
