The Fire Next Time is an essential read for anyone seeking to gain insight into Black history and the complexities of race in America. Baldwin's honest recollection of his personal experiences and standpoints on systematic injustices reflects the true resilience that the Black community holds. A brilliant, and beautiful, call to action concerning his vision of racial justice. 10/10.

Well. That book aged pretty damn well.

"It is the responsibility of free men to trust and to celebrate what is constant--birth, struggle, and death are constant, and so is love, though we may not always think so--and to apprehend the nature of change, and to be able and willing to change."

"What it comes to is that we, who can scarcely be considered a white nation, persist in thinking of ourselves as one, we condemn ourselves, with the truly white nations, to sterility and decay, whereas if we could accept ourselves as we are, we might bring new life to the Western achievements, and transform them."

"How can one dream of power in any terms other than the symbols of power?"

No one writes like Baldwin. It’s hard to fathom how he so patiently explained everything to us IN THE ‘60’S and yet here we are today. Still broken. Still blind. You may be familiar with the quote “I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.”
It’s a good one. Lots of applications. But now that I’ve read The Fire Next Time, I prefer, “Do I really want to be integrated into a burning house?”

It’s Baldwin, of course it’s immaculately written, every paragraph worth being in awe of. However, the political message seemed very weak. Maybe it’s because it was written 60+ years ago but i feel that it lacking a critique of capitalism leaves out a fundamental aspect of black (and brown and lgbt and all other) oppression. It however was beautiful in it’s description of growing up as a marginalized person.

Stunning. You’ve underlined parts of this book. Go back occasionally and re-read those.
