Siddhartha

I hadn't read this since high school. I remember enjoying it then, but reading it now I feel like I could identify with the character more. Interesting how Siddhartha meets the Buddha, but in real life Siddhartha was the Buddha. What resonated most with me about this story was how Siddhartha had to live a life in the world to reach enlightenment, that a pious life of a Brahmin was just a dead-end. Also, he had to find his own path and be attentive at every moment along the way. It's true. My story is my story. That's where I need to do my work. I can't try to be anyone else.

Not what I expected.  It's a little blah.  I'm struggling to find the real lesson or message here and why it's considered a classic.  It was fine but not much to comment on.
It's almost depressing really, as it seems the only way to find peace is to live life and peace only comes as you are old and alone, but then what?

Finished today, purely for the sake of completing my Book Bingo 2014 card. I chose it to complete the book in translation square, and because it is so short. However, it is NOT a book to read quickly nor during the multitude of distractions at the end of the year.

I only had a couple chapters left when I lost my copy...I know it is here *somewhere* or there is a possibility it was returned with library books even though it was a personal copy. I ended up listening to the final chapters via a free recording on YouTube (also not recommended, but it was free).

All of which is to say, I did not do this book justice and I plan to reread it again in 2015. It helped when a friend who is also reading/listening to it framed it as a work of ideas rather than a novel.

i think i dont have the tools to fully appreciate this book. i may have to come back to it in a couple of years

Stunning.

I read this book in high school , and while I enjoyed it I did not quite recognize the impact it had on word view. Reading it again closer to the age of Siddhartha as a ferryman than as a Samana it is as fulfilling as before.

Women are not very well represented, but in a story of a man searching for enlightenment thousands of years ago written by a man over a hundred years ago it is not a huge surprise.

If you approach this book with an open mind I think you'll find it enjoyable. The Gutenberg press version of the book has a few spots where of turns to if and other minor aberrations.

I read this years ago and it was interesting to see the change in the way I viewed it.  At times, I was quite frustrated with Siddhartha.  But, overall, still an impressive book and thought provoking.

I appreciated this as a walk towards the human pursuit of peace and fulfillment that we crave. However. I recognize that women have their own ways of being ridiculous, but I did keep thinking “wow these men are kind of ridiculous, if it wasn’t for the women (and some of the men) the society would just grind to a halt.

A big drink of water from the river of life
