There's a trick to spinning lies. You have to embed the truth in there, just a glimmer of it. That's the part that will catch people, and it's what makes the rest of your lies sound like truth, too.

I kept thinking that everything happening felt very familiar but didn't know why. Well, have you heard of Jane Eyre? This is a retake on that classic gothic tale but not as good.

If I were to ignore the badly done insta love, this was a very entertaining read. Even though I was annoyed by every single character, this was a necessary mix to the suspense and that twisty end. A bit predictable here and there but there are fewer and fewer shocking thillers so I'm not that surprised.

Adding this to the Good For Her™️ Extended Universe

In [a: Rachel Hawkin]'s retelling, Jane met the good looking and riches Eddie Rochester. But Jane's fairy-tale romance is complicated by points of interest of Eddie's previous spouse, who disappeared only months ago.

The book was introduced as a gothic book, but I did not see it being gothic at all. Instead, it was like a standard thriller.

However I really enjoyed this book! Plenty of twists and I always had to try to guess the truth.. The first half I was completely captivated, I thought it would slow down a bit but then move on fast again at the end. I wish there was more of an epilogue though, but overall it was a great read.

The Wife Upstairs was a quick read for me. I enjoyed the short chapters and the unreliable narrator. It kept me guessing the whole time and while there were many implausibilities in the story, I was hooked.

Four stars for enjoyment. Three for the plot.
