I need to start accepting that I am not impressed by thrillers. It feels like watching reality TV- entertaining, because someone is bound to do something ridiculous, and a good pallet cleanser that focuses on plot and drama with less emphasis on character depth. Not every thriller is like this- but majority of the ones I have read are. I doubt I’ll stop reading them altogether, but I still haven’t found many that simultaneously thrill me and make me care about the characters.
This book was a bit ridiculous and not very thrilling at all, even during the twists and climax of the book! The only reason i gave it 2 stars is because the ending was satisfying and made me wonder.
I listened on audio and the narration was mediocre. I didn’t love the fake southern accents.

In this book we're introduced to Jane, a newcomer to Birmingham, Alabama, who works as a dog-walker in the upscale Thornfield Estates community. It's a place of wealth and opulence, filled with extravagant houses and affluent residents. Jane, struggling financially, considers taking items left behind by her clients.
Her life takes a turn when she meets Eddie Rochester, a mysterious widower in Thornfield Estates. His wife, Bea, tragically died in a boating accident, along with her best friend, their bodies never recovered. Jane is drawn to Eddie's wealth and enigmatic demeanor, seeing him as a potential source of security.
However, as their romance develops, Jane becomes increasingly haunted by the legendary Bea, a successful entrepreneur with a captivating backstory. Jane grapples with insecurities about measuring up to Bea's legacy and faces the looming threat of her own past catching up with her in this intriguing tale.
This book was an exhilarating rollercoaster of secrets and surprises. The author masterfully wove a web of intrigue, ensuring that no character was without flaws or hidden agendas. It's a compelling exploration of the human condition, highlighting that imperfections and secrets are inherent to us all. As the plot unfolded, the twists and turns left me constantly guessing. Just when I thought I had a character figured out, a new layer of complexity would be revealed. It's a testament to the author's storytelling skills that they managed to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout the book.
What I appreciated most was the realism in the characters. Nobody was perfect, and their imperfections made them all the more relatable. This story delves deep into the intricacies of human nature, showcasing the multifaceted aspects of our personalities.

I liked this! It's not the perfect thriller by any means, but it was a fun read. And who doesn't love a Jane Eyre retelling. This one follows a cast of manipulative people, and Hawkins did a fair job of keeping me on my toes.
This is a great retelling! All of the familiar characters are interesting and believable in their new roles. If you like gothic thrillers, I recommend giving this a shot.
If you read a lot of thrillers, you'll probably find this predictable, but it's still a fun read. For a first attempt at an adult novel, I think it's promising. I'd love to read another adult thriller from Hawkins in the future.

I listened to the audiobook. The narrators were good. The story was interesting and I definitely guessed the killer. But it was still enjoyable.
