Un mariage en blanc

Mary Balogh

3.76 AVERAGE

I like when a woman has her own money! Too many rags-to-riches tropes that this one was refreshing. Felt longer than it needed to be but I enjoyed it.

Disclaimer: this won't work well for everyone as well as it did for me, but I loved it. Marriage of convenience, honorable af hero, strong-willed heroine. Mary Balogh's soft and comforting writing. Her stories are like hugs. Hugs I actually enjoy.

Slightly Married is a great start tot he Berwyn Saga. The heroine was a coal miner's daughter who was wealthy. The hero was a second son of a duke and a military hero. He married her after her brother died to take care of the heroine, and they fall in love in this marriage of convenience story. Her children were orphans that she took in. Her household was a safe haven for those who needed it. This story had an equally strong hero and heroine. I just needed them to talk sooner! 4.5 stars.

3.5 - I'm a sucker for the marriage of convenience trope.. Though I enjoyed the first in this series, I don't find the Bedwyn family very likable compared to other HR families like the Bridgertons ([b:The Duke and I|110391|The Duke and I (Bridgertons, #1)|Julia Quinn|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1379594717s/110391.jpg|846763]) or the Hathaways ([b:Mine Till Midnight|693016|Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, #1)|Lisa Kleypas|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1380326170s/693016.jpg|679345]).

This is the first book of the Bedwyn Saga by Mary Balogh. When one of Colonel Aidan Bedwyn's soldiers dies on the battlefield, Aidan promises the man that he will personally deliver the news of his death and take care of her--no matter what. Eve is distraught when she hears that her brother has died. Eve's father's will states that her home, Ringwood Manor, will belong to her for one year after he dies. After the one year anniversary of her father's death, the home will pass on to her brother. Eve's brother dies before the one year mark has passed, so she will lose her home and it will go to a distant cousin. In order to let her keep her home, Aidan marries Eve. When the Duke of Bedwyn, Aidan's older brother, finds out about the marriage, Eve must present herself to society. This book shows the unique relationship between Wulfric, Duke of Bedwyn, and his siblings. You can tell that it is setting the stage for the second book in the series. I enjoyed seeing the relationship grow between Eve and Adian. Eve is a strong, independent, kind woman. It was refreshing to see her stand up for herself. Fans of historical romance will enjoy this book.

Lovely.

This is one of those books that reminds me why I read and love the romance genre. There is something absolutely magical about this perfect book, possibly this entire series, that I will attempt, though probably fail miserably, at articulating.

This is my second Balogh and in both I absolutely fell in love with her characters, both main and supporting (all really well drawn), because they treat each other with kindness, care, and generosity. The plot and conflict were superbly executed in this one. And the romance between Eve and Aidan just sparkled… I was spellbound and was openly sobbing at a cafe by the end of the book.

I feel incredibly fortunate having read this book and introduced to the Bedwyns. This will 100% be on my all time favorite list.
