“Sacrifice is an inherent part of love. It’s inevitably going to hurt sometimes if you care enough.” I didn’t want to like this book. I almost DNF’d near the beginning, because I was NOT interested in a book about organized religion, a religious leader, nor another book about a former sex worker. It seems like Sierra Simone has covered all the above thoroughly. And this book is very heavily about organized religion. It takes place at least 95% in sponsored synagogue activities. But the story and Rosie Danna’s writing just wouldn’t let me quit them. I ended up loving and needing the message of letting go of shame. I copied the entire final lecture into my journal because the self care formula is so beautiful. I think this book changed part of me for the better and for that I normally give 5⭐️, but I have to take off a half star because the religious preaching was too excessive.

Didn’t finish on the first attempt but enjoyed it the second try. It was definitely more character development and romance, and less smut than The Roommate.

Interesting and different, was enjoyable to read. Little to no spice up until 80% of the story

Second read: March 2025 - still feel the same way except after reading both again I think I liked the first book better!

First read September 10-21, 2021: 4.5 stars ✨
I really enjoyed this book, even though I read it slowly because I was busy. The modern Jewish aspect really stood out and captured me, and made me want to read more books with that in it! I think this story was better than The Roommate, which surprised me!

My only complaint/half star loss was just the way the conflict came up, like you knew it was coming but it wasn’t fully explained I felt? Hard to say but it wouldn’t discourage me from recommending the book or eventually reading again! Can’t wait to see what else Rosie Danan writes.

2.25 ⭐️ Maybe I just had high expectations...

But this was kind of disappointing. Naomi felt like such a badass in book #1, and here she just came off as insecure and rude as hell. Also, I didn't know that the MMC here was a Rabbi and that half of the book would be about singing the praises of organised religion, but lite? Like, it's ok because the congregation is small, and sure they're mostly judgemental and rude, but then you should just forgive, forget and go back to them? Also, the US might be worse than I thought if antisemitic slurs are used as freely and often as this book suggests.

Idk, but this felt like it was trying to do something and it didn't fully reach its goal.

I accidentally read this book, and then realized it was a sequel. Oh well! This’s was a great escape, and a really unlikely story that I loved to the last page. What happens when you put together a rabbi and a former sex worker? A really sex-positive book that depicts what could be an actual adult relationship.

surprisingly the religious aspects did not bother me
