And I'm back to reading the most popular graphic novels on goodreads, so it must be December. Superman. I don't read a lot of Superman. This was actually a pretty decent What If book. Good writing, good art, strong understanding of the DC universe. Believable. With a bunch of twists including one at the very end. An interesting read if not high art.
okay the ending made it for me. in the last 5 pages it had such a fun twist that really brought the story together for me. and interesting exploration of an alternate world. it had its fair amount of twists (such as the later brainiac one) that made the narrative and the concepts being critiqued better to me. lois <3 a queen forever
Hmm. Not a fan of the ~~~twist~~~ at the end, and some of the ways things were put together were silly to me. I liked it but it isn't sitting well for me.

This was such a fun comic. Putting aside all the atrocities or whatever, Communist Superman? like are you kidding that's so fun. This story is wild from start to finish, especially that ending oh my god. Ukrainian Superman, Russian Wonder Woman and Batman, Lex Luthor with hair, and Lois marrying Luthor, I was obsessed the whole time. Also: "Russia is cold. Why can't Batman have a warm hat?" Dave Johnson thank you so much for that gift

Wait, Superman would be a blind follower of the culture of any place he landed?
What if Superman landed in Ukraine, back when it was under communist rule? And what if he were really clever, the way he never really struck me as being in his usual stories?
A premise that promised to be awesome, but a lot of things were very much simplified - for example, Superman and Lex Luthor are capable of 'sorting out' economies and making the whole world prosperous and happy at the drop of a hat. No details, nothing - they just take care of things, so that the story can simply be about America vs. Russia.
And despite his amazing cleverness, Superman never manages to realize that brainwashing people is bad.
An interesting idea, but somehow I feel it failed to live up to its potential and really explore the ideas it toyed with.

I wanted to read it because I watched the animated movie based on it and that was hot garbage. This alternate DC universe imagines Kal-el crashes in the rural Stalin controlled the Soviet Union. This concept is incredible and the execution has it's moments but I kinda wish it was long and handled this Superman's origin closer. It is interesting seeing Superman take up the Communist ideals and with the help of Brainiac dominating the globe in what he believes is a peaceful transition. The idea of Batman living under the tunnels of Moscow fighting a guerilla war against soviet superman was my favorite part. Uber-capitalist vigilante hiding under communist superman's Moscow was a pretty genius reversal. In the end, it could've been a bit deeper.
