Really liked this one. Cut through a lot of garbage but never answered his main question...how to improve race performance? My key takeaway: it's ok to ditch GPS, HR, power meters, split times and just go for broke! You'll have more performance outliers this way.
The perfect summary of interesting theories soberly grounded on proper scientific research. The mind does play a big part in sports performance. How you can use it to your advantage is the trickier part.
Spoiler… it also shows us that, in the end, “it depends”. Also, hands out yet another point for the good old placebo, which may be the very best no-side-effect aid in your life.

Hutchinson achieved the perfect blend of science and storytelling. A must read for any endurance athlete.
Some really interesting stuff - chapter on impact of mental fatigue on RPE and how this can be trained in particular - but generally didn't find anything too revolutionary in this, and a lot of what could have been was a bit too inconclusive. Enjoyable read as a collection of interesting anecdotes and a history of physiology and sports psychology

This book was a fascinating look at endurance athletes, what helps them succeed, and the mistakes that were made that caused them to fail. It was a little slow at times, and it jumped around a bit, but overall, I enjoyed the narrative and learned a lot about my own drive and motivations. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who is hooked on pushing their bodies to their limits, like I am. 💪🏼
