Stop the presses, folks! I, Sarah Hill, actually LIKED this manga graphic novel! It's like a creepy episode of ER, and I love me a good medical mystery. Dr. Tenma is a Japanese man who moved to West Germany in the 1980's to learn brain surgery. He becomes the best, and tries to climb the political medical ladder, but decides that patients are more important than hospital directors and their doctors. Unknowingly, he creates a monster who preys on the innocent. I actually want to read the next volume--who knew this was possible for me? :)

Oh wow my first medical thriller manga series and I really love it.
It's dark and gruesome and crazy. From hospital politics to serial killer, no dull moments here, pretty intense, great suspense, great story, great characters and that ending, I don't know which direction this series will go.
Overall it's a thriller with a twist and great characters and definitely will continue to read this series

i started reading this manga series after i rewatched Monster when it was added on n*fl*x. i had this OBSESSION with the anime in middle and early high school and i always told people it was my favorite anime (bc cool kids cant just like naruto!!!!) rewatching it reminded me about how truly buckwild this story gets and i was excited to read it and experience it a new way.
i took a huge break after volume 1, primarily because the manga and anime are actually pretty consistent in their versions of the same scenes. very little is changed in the animated adaptation to the point i wish i had read it before rewatching it to make the reading more engaging. nonetheless, -1 star not because of that but because there is sooooo many background and slow parts in the first few parts of this series (and anticipating the level of buckwildness to elevate)

I know I started reading this series before when I was living in A2, but apparently I forgot to log it. Oh well. Anyway, not quite as astonishingly brilliant as 20th Century Boys or Pluto, but pretty darn readable anyway.
To date, this is the closest read-alike I've found for the incomparable Death Note manga series, and the first three volumes at least are strong in their own right.
Dr. Tenma, a young, idealistic surgeon (think vintage Jack from Lost) gets in hot water when he takes time away from a prestigious patient to try and save a young boy's life. He saves the child's life, only to find out later that Johan is actually a sociopath and (unknown to the general public) the guilty party behind the horrific murder of his parents. With the doctor instant persona non grata with his status-minded fiancee and the hospital, Tenma takes to the road to try to track down the young man. Unfortunately, Johan manages to stay just a half-step ahead of him with identity changes and plastic surgery and Tenma's wild stories and erratic behavior tend to land him in the worst possible place at the wrong time and draw the attention of the police. Can Tenma catch up with the real killer before he ends up behind bars for murders he didn't commit? That's the question that drives the series, which lends a Fugitive-esque quality that's carried off very successfully.
Age Appropriateness (vol. 1-3):
No fan service--it's just not that kind of series. At the end of the third volume there are some references about prostitution, though you don't see anything and there's no detail. Still, with this being a true thriller, there are points in the first few volumes that are enough to give me nightmares. Some pretty disturbing elements for sure: such as child abuse, psychological torture, brainwashing, murder...this is hardly Happy Happy Clover here. And when the reader finds out more about Johan's background and how he got to be so cold-blooded and ruthless it only gets darker. As compelling and suspenseful as it is, it's not for the faint of heart, and probably not recommendable for anyone under 16.
