The Half of It

Madison Beer

4.04 AVERAGE

I honestly needed this. Left me feeling seen and validated. Exceeded all my expectations.

this was so beautifully written and as someone who has followed Madison’s career since I was like 13 it was so crazy to hear about everything going on behind the scenes. It was such a quick read but there was so much meaningful stuff in it.

Ugh, I think I'm coming to realize I don't like reading celebrity memoirs. I love Madison, I'm a huge fan of hers, there is so much of her story that I can relate to and unfortunate events that I have also been through. I really enjoyed finally hearing her talk about these topics and giving us her story. She had some really important advice, life lessons, and empowering quotes, but the rest of this book fell flat for me. This is no hate towards Madison, I really do love her, but I disliked the organization of this book and the timeline was really confusing to me. It felt like the same 5 topics were the only things touched on for the entire book and I ended up losing interest halfway through. I wish it were written better. I felt like it was all over the place and I didn't like the journal prompts and Q&As that separated chapters.

Madison Beer took a lot of courage writing about her life, and it is truly admirable. I enjoy her as an artist, and also enjoyed this book. The writing was a bit simplestic; however, the message of the book is kindness so that is what matters. Be kind to others, stand up for what you believe in, have empathy for others, and prioritize your mental health.

As someone who struggles with mental health, it was so nice to see someone being open about their own struggles. She was open and truly bared her soul in this book. The message is what matters, and she hit the nail on the head. Bravo!

Favorite lines:
“You can’t hate yourself into the person you want to become. You can’t hate your body into looking a different way. You can’t hold yourself to an unrealistic standard and then punish yourself for falling short. Hating and critiquing yourself is backward progress.”

This memoir was so much more than I was expecting. Being a huge fan of Madison Beer, I was surprised that I knew so little about her. Her account of her life felt so raw, and even though I saw a lot of criticism online saying, “She hasn’t experienced enough to write a memoir,” I would beg to differ. I don’t know many people her age that have been through so much. I really loved how intimate reading her book felt and I now have a new found respect for Madison and other artists in her industry. You truly don’t know what people go through behind the screen.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

i’ve only been a fan of madison beer for a little over a year now. funnily enough, it wasn’t because of her music. i had seen a bunch of videos of her on tour and her interactions with her fans that made me admire her as a person, the love for her music came after. reading this book only solidified what i first admired. i knew nothing about what she discusses in this book and my heart breaks for her. the way she handles everything with grace is so admirable and my respect for her has only increased.

this book is such a wonderful reminder to simply be kind. you never know what someone has gone through or is going through. we could all afford to give ourselves, and each other, a little more compassion and love.
