This is a legitimately entertaining book. I laughed out loud several times.

Awesome.

Unlike many celebrity memoirs, this felt genuinely from NPH and did a good job of mixing in humor, wit, and personal experiences that shapes his history and life. I enjoyed the quirky style of Choose Your Own Adventure, though I listened to it as an audiobook, which took the actual choice out. It's quirky and fun and different, which felt like a good fit for NPH. While NPH has played some major roles, it was nice to get to hear about his journey off screen - growing up in the spotlight while coming to terms with his sexuality in particular.

I already loved NPH from HIMYM, but this memoir made me appreciate who he is as a person. It’s hilarious, it’s honest, and it’s a fun read. I didn’t totally love the “build your own adventure” style of it so I just read it straight through, which I think most people do. I will say it got a little long towards the end, hence the three stars. I’m really giving it a 3.5 rating. Regardless, for a surprising find in a bargain book bin, I am pretty happy with it.

I really like Neil Patrick Harris in everything I’ve watched him in but this just wasn’t for me I guess

CHOOSE YOUR OWN REVIEW

[1] Congratulations! You have in your hands a copy of Neil Patrick Harris' autobiography. If you eagerly crack it open and begin reading, continue to paragraph [2]. If this was a gift and you dislike Neil Patrick Harris for whatever (obviously not homophobic because what century are we in!) reasons, skip to paragraph [5].

[2] You open the book! It smells like new book smell. But it's a choose-your-own-adventure?! Whaaaaaat? If you read the book as intended, making choices and skipping around as you go, experiencing life at its fullest AS NEIL, continue to paragraph [3]. If you decide to read straight through, skip to paragraph [4].

[3] You've read the book! You experienced life as Neil! You got a plum gig as a kid star with good luck and hard work, discovered you liked boys and married the cutest one of all, had a couple of even cuter kids, did some magic tricks, drank some carefully crafted cocktails, and hosted the Tonys lots of times. You even got in a couple of jabs at some d-bags. If you had the time of your life (and who wouldn't, you're NEIL!), skip to paragraph [6]. If you hated the book (and therefore obviously hate FUN), skip to paragraph [5].

[4] FOR ALL THAT IS HOLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Nah, actually it's okay. I mean, you miss out on some of the fun, but as long as you have your short term memory in tact and the ability to maintain logical consistency in your head, you get through the book just fine. If despite having no respect for the rules you had an awesome time reading about Neil, skip to paragraph [6]. If this totally ruined the book for you, continue to paragraph [5].

[5] This book is the WORST. You go to click the first star (Because why won't this thing let you give it NO STARS? GEEZ.), but just as you do, some unknown, potentially mystical force bumps your shoulder and your hand slips on the mouse. FIVE STARS. [The end!]

[6] This book is SERIOUSLY AMAZING. It was so fun, and everyone should be Neil Patrick Harris. You kind of wish you could keep being him, actually. FIVE STARS! If, after spending this quality time with Neil you want to read about another well-adjusted gay man with an awesome life, go get a copy of [b:Anything Goes: My Autobiography|1847329|Anything Goes My Autobiography|John Barrowman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1328729548s/1847329.jpg|2745637] by John Barrowman. If instead you want to spend MORE quality time with Neil, fire up Hulu and watch all 97 episode of Doogie Howser in a row. [The end!]
emotional funny informative medium-paced

First thing you should know is I love Neil Patrick Harris and have loved/been a fan of his for almost 9 years. So putting this book on my Christmas list was a no-brainer.

I immediately loved the style that Neil wrote this book in. It was so different, and so NPH, that it was already getting a 5 star rating from me! If there was a higher rating of stars, he would get that. Now I'm not one for Audiobooks. I've never bought one before because I just could never enjoy books in the past when they were read to me. But about 50 pages in, I decided to give this one a try, mainly because it was narrated by Neil Patrick Harris himself. I bought it and read along with Neil Patrick Harris' voice in my ears. It was the best reading experience ever! I highly recommend if you have the money to blow away to do this! It's NPH, okay!! He's worth it!

The first time I saw Neil Patrick Harris was actually on Big Brother. I didn't watch Harold and Kumar until after I got into HIMYM. But I was and still kinda am a HUGE Big Brother fan, and he appeared on All-Stars Season 7 in the summer of 2006. After that I looked into HIMYM because he was on the show and my, at the time, favourite player of Big Brother, Dr. Will loved Neil and this show. (Dr. Will is still one of my top favs, but not my all-time fav). I bought Season 1 of HIMYM not long after that, and by the end of watching that season, I was in love with Neil Patrick Harris. He instantly became one of my favourite human beings ever, and in my eyes, he can do no wrong!

I loved hearing Neil's story. He completely takes you on his journey of his love for theatre and magic. His career in TV and movies. His journey of self-discovery of being a gay man. And his journey to finding the love of his life, David Burtka, and their journey of surrogacy and becoming parents to Gideon and Harper. From start to finish, this book made me love and appreciate how truly awesome, and legendary, Neil Patrick Harris is!

A highlight from the book & audiobook: The chapter where Neil reads about David. In the book, it has sidenotes all over it of David's thoughts on what Neil wrote, and in the audiobook, you get to hear the two of them reading it together with Neil reading what he wrote and David inserting his sidenotes while Neil is talking. It's amazing! I just love them as one loves a celebrity couple. This was a nice touch to the reading experience.

If you are a NPH fan, I urge you to read his journey! It will do something you thought wasn't possible, you will love him even more than you already did.

I loved the choose your own adventure aspect of it. Neil is a great story teller and it was a fun read.

NPH is awesome! A very different autobiography and very fun!
