This was a bit harder for me to read compared to The White Queen but I accredit that to Margaret’s character as a whole. It was easier to get through with audiobook for the beginning!
Fantastic continuation of the Plantaganets. It chronicles the life of the first Henry Tudor and how he comes to power and establishes the Tudor dynasty that we all know and love.
I can't wait for the next one now, this series is fantastic for British history fans. It's beautifully written and as accurate as Phillipa Gregory can make it with the little information that we have at hand.

Acting as a counterpoint for the events of 'The White Queen' Gregory chooses the mother of King Henry VII as her heroine. Margaret Beaufort (then Tudor, Stafford and Stanley with each successive marriage) is a less endearing character than Elizabeth Woodville but the story of her marriage at a oung age is a more common one for omen of this period. She's barely fourteen when she gives birth to her first, and only child, the future King Henry VII, and is brought up against the harsh reality of her exsistence when she hears the midwife say that her own mother orders that the baby should be saved, above the mother, during her difficult childbirth. Thus she learns to live through her son, pushing him to achieve the power that she cannot gain. Believing that everything she does is the will of God Margaret justifies her lust for power and her envy of Elizabeth Woodville, who occupies the position Margaret feels is hers. It is because of this self-righteousness that Margaret is harder to engage with but the history is, as always, well researched and well written.
Interesting that the "red" queen refers to Margaret Beaufort (red rose of Lancaster and all that), when she makes a point of describing both Margaret d'Anjou and Elizabeth of York as wearing scandalously red dresses.
Enjoyable, though the last 100 pages get to be a bit much with Margaret's unrelenting jealousy and certainty that this is God's plan. I'm sure it illustrates something accurate about the period, but it was annoying to read about so repetitively. Minor, but also annoying, the map didn't have the names of towns mentioned in the story and it would have been more useful for the lineage chart to go another generation.
informative
medium-paced
I didn't like this as much as the first. There was a lot of repetition of material from the first book and I was a bit bored overall
This was a very interesting mix of history and fiction. As a fan of history, this book is up my alley. While it is a work in f fiction, it is also based on historical fact.
Margaret Beaufort is a woman of many layers. Pious, yet eager for power. A wife 3 times, widowed twice, mother. Yet her life is full of more lows than highs.
I enjoyed the insight Philippa Gregory offers based on fact, speculation and her own ideas of what this almost forgotten woman who played a vital role in the War of the Roses.

This was fine book. But I think I just got little tired of entire series. I already read “The Lady of the Rivers” & “The White Queen” and this one reminded me much on “The Lady of the Rivers”. But in difference of Jacquetta I actually strongly disliked Margaret. It’s fine book, but it is my least favorite of 3 I’ve red. I think I may get bit tired of this series so I’ll wait until next month to read “The Kingmaker's Daughter” just to get bit rest.

Ovo je fina knjiga. Ali mislim da sam se malo umorila od serijala. Već sam pročitala “The Lady of the Rivers” i “The White Queen” a ova me baš asocira na “The Lady of the Rivers”.
