Sometimes you just need a sweet treat and The Summer of Jordi Perez (And The Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding is just that.
It's a high fluff, low conflict YA lesbian romance about fat femme fashion blogger Abby crushing on cute photographer Jordi at her summer internship that put a smile on my face the whole way through (although making a dubious face at teenagers doing unpaid internships, is this legal in the US?) I loved Abby's strong sense of herself as a fat queer femme, despite the body-shaming efforts of her 'healthy' eating blogger mum to make her lose weight, and her amazing colourful style. 100% would wear all her fruit-covered outfits. There's minimal angst, charming romance, and Abby has a cute side storyline about making friends with a guy and trying out every burger in LA for his dad's app.
Recommended for a delightful teen girls in love read that I would have been so happy to have as a teenager.

While this book doesn't reinvent the YA romance, it executes it nearly flawlessly. The characters are likeable, the plot doesn't drag, and the sensibilities are smart and heartfelt.
This was really cute, fluffy, and very very readable. I’d often lose chunks of time reading without even realizing how long I’d been reading. More of a 3.5 star (Goodreads...we really need half stars!) because a little of the conflict felt too easy to figure out and too easily resolved. But I’m thrilled to have another fluffy ff YA to recommend!
4.5 stars.
A really fun story about a fat, queer girl and her first romance. I enjoyed the plot, even as someone who doesn't know much about photography or fashion. Unfortunately the conflict and resolution of the last 1/4 of the book brought the rating down for me. The conflict could have been avoided with communication, and the wrap up of the ending felt really rushed. Overall though, a good, empowering story with thankfully no weight loss thread!

This book was so sweet and cute, and genuinely funny. I really enjoyed it.
What worked:
Really sweet story of first romance and falling in love. I liked that this story didn't center around Abby being gay, she just was and her relationship with Jordi took me back to being 17 and falling in love for the first time.
Great setting of East LA. Lots of place markers.
What didn't work:
I wanted more of Abby's blog. More of the content. We got a lot of her outfits and did understand that she was fashionable but how do you have a blog about fashion that doesn't feature pictures, just reblogs of products? Had a hard time picturing that.
The conflict didn't feel as fully fleshed out as it could. I think there could have been more exploration around Abby's relationship with her mom and her body image, but I felt we just scratched the surface and then Abby's fight with Jordi about pictures didn't feel as high stakes.
