"Baby, we have no choice of what color we're born or who our parents are or whether we're rich or poor. What we do have is some choice over what we make of our lives once we're here." Mama cupped my face in her hands. "And I pray to God you'll make the best of yours." (p. 129)

This is one of my most fave books. I first read it when I had to do a book report about a Newbery Medal book. It was between that and The Giver by ...hmm I forgot her name. Anyway, so The Giver kind of put me to sleep so I started Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, and I'm so glad I did. And I know I sound like some weird book commercial but I'm serious.More people need to read this book...:)

I see why this book has won so many awards! Well-developed characters, dramatic action, and not-too-scary but definitely tense, captivating moments. As an educator-in-training, as I was reading this book, I saw where there could be so many teachable moments if I taught this book as a class. The twist at the end is incredibly thought provoking and I could see many good discussions on this book taking place. I loved it; didn't realize it was part of a series and I look forward to reading more about the Logan family.

When my sister was in school, she didn't like to read. I remember her reading this book and loving it. For some reason, it's taken me 30 years to read it myself. I completely understand why she loved it so much.

This book is heavy but beautiful.

This book was really interesting in showing the differences between whites and African Americans in the 1930s in the south. I was on edge for the last half of the book because I kept thinking something awful was going to happen since the cover of the book shows fire. It was a great book and showed some great lessons to be learned. I would use this in my classroom for Black History month or when we started talking about Civil Rights.
I also really loved the Logan family. I felt like I was part of their family at times.
