I felt generally unimpressed with this. The story just felt like a disaster from the beginning. The last 20 pages were the best part for me but still didn’t make me like the book.

How this book annoyed me!
The beginning was badly written in my opinion, it got better toward the end. I didn't care for Theresa at the beginning, but quite like her evolution at the end. When she left Garrett it was a mature, good decision that reflects well what most women would have done.
I guess the author's goal was for us to fall in love with Garrett as well, but his behavior was so problematic. The old trope of the perfect man still troubled by his long lost love is getting old. Also as he's got attachment issues & his need to have Theresa right next to him is not cute, at least for me.
I used to say literature cannot get old-fashioned, but I guess it can.
The descriptions were so boring as well, instead of a deep dive into their thoughts, the author spends forever describing mundane things : she thinks about her chores for an entire page, the way the coffee boils etc... If you write it well, you can write about anything & make it interesting & poetic, which is what I guess he was trying to do. But his writing doesn't have enough quality to do that. It's just boring & weird.
To finish, frustrating book! The ending redeemed it a bit for me, I found it fitting, even though the goal probably was for it to be heartbreaking.

I really wanted to read a book with sailing as the setting backdrop and this one did not deliver on that end. It was mostly about scuba diving with a little sailing. Very different from the movie, but similar in key areas. I think I just don’t like reading the book after watching the movie. However, it was a quick read and I did like the flashback/dreams to Catherine.

I'm pretty certain Nicholas Sparks just spends weekends writing sickeningly bad stories meant to touch women who really just want to read romance novels but don't want to be seen reading them. The writing is poor, the plot lines are dumb and predictable, and there is rarely anything to make you look back and thing, "Well, at least I got that out of it."
That said, each of his books seems to be uniquely qualified to become a Lifetime-esque chick flick. Hollywood seems to agree. So if that's your favorite movie genre, but you need something to bring to the beach that could just as easily be swalled up by the tides, these are your books.
