3.58 AVERAGE

What an excellent debut novel from Kody Keplinger! All I know is that this wont be my last.

3,5 stars

We recently started a book club at work based off a list of books to read before they become movies. Right before choosing our first book, the trailer for The DUFF was released and so we decided to start with that. The trailer for the book looks amusing enough. I think this might be one of the few cases in which the movie is better than the book.

I've read plenty of young adult books, and most of them have been very well written. This book was just awful from the start to the finish. I'm not sure I would even classify this as young adult, as sex is one of the predominant topics in the book. That aside, everything in the book was too easily resolved. There were a lot of conflicts and it's hard to believe each one was wrapped up with a perfect little bow with little to no effort.

I'd skip this, and I don't say that about many books.

I picked this book up because I enjoyed the movie adaption. And honestly this is a very rare case of me enjoying the movie a lot more. I thought that the movie gave Bianca more complexity and likability. I also feel like the concept of the DUFF was handled with more tact and nuance in the movie? Idk I was kind of let down by this book given how much 'slut' and 'whore' were tossed around. I get that Bianca was going through some things but she just came off as really unlikable. Like I felt as though SHE was the mean girl of the story and that's not good if you're writing a high school, coming of age novel. Unless you're trying to tell the story from the POV of the mean girl. But Bianca was supposed to represent the average girl. She just came off as super judgmental and mean and it kind of ruined the story for me.
The only thing that I think the book did better was the love triangle with Bianca, Toby, and Wesley.

Hmmmmmm definitely for older teens who don't mind swearing and sex and body shaming.

3.5 stars. I've seen the movie multiple times and loved it. The book was okay. Some parts I enjoyed, some I really didn't like. Overall it felt more serene and grown up (in terms of the topics discussed, not in terms of the characters), without the easy, fluffy charm and wonderfully stupid humour of the movie. But it was a super quick read and I'll probably even give it to some friends for them to read it, too.

I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I figured from the title and the description that it was going to be another cliché story about a girl becoming suddenly popular with the help of a makeover and the guy that somehow falls in love with her in the process. And while some of that cliché is there, it's expertly mixed with darker themes transforming it from a forgettable book into something that seems very real. The great thing about The Duff is that everyone can relate. We have all struggled with not feeling pretty enough, or smart enough, or good enough and this book captures those feelings amazingly well. I definitely recommend it.

Is it too common to say that I identified myself to Bianca? Because I really did!
