Bianca’s life is fairly normal, she goes to school, she hangs out with friends. Simple, normal. Then things get more complicated when the school womanizer, Wesley, calls Bianca the duff, designated ugly fat friend. The relationship that unfolds between the two plus troubles at home quickly stir up Bianca’s otherwise normal life.

Based on the commercials for the movie version, I thought The Duff was going to be vastly different than it was. The term duff is used only about three times outside of Bianca’s and Wesley’s relationship.

The plot is enjoyable albeit predictable. The characters are realistic. I really liked the way all of the relationships played out.

After having watched the movie, I think the book was way better. I put off watching the movie because I figured it would be very similar to the book. In reality they are vastly different, they may as well be completely different stories. The movie has a closer feel to movies like She’s All That, where the unpopular girl gets a makeover that somehow leads to the popular boy to falling for her.

The book felt more real and way less cheesy than the movie. Which is probably a large part of why I found the book more compelling.

This book was very interesting. Wesley is a major hottie though if I ever met him I would totally slap him on the face and insult him unlessly. Yes, I know I am a Duff. Which I am but that doesn't mean you can advertise it to the world. But it wasn't like I didn't like him before, honestly, I would have thought he was funny. If he came up to me and said the things he did, I would have left him talking to air. I'm not the nicest person when I'm insulted. The book was good not for kids. Bianca is a little weak sometimes and not smart enough to think properly. She alright as a main character.

AHH! I really wasn't sure about this book, didn't expect to like it but oh I thought it was brilliant. I loved Wesley, he was hilarious, cocky and hot but he also had a sensitive side.

I enjoyed this book well enough, but found myself unable to fully get into it. There was nothing particularly wrong with the writing or characters; I just felt the story was a little young for me--but not at all in a bad way. (Gah I feel old admitting this!) I just didn't feel I connected with the characters or their trials as much as I should have.

That being said, I found Bianca's confidence and general "screw you" attitude to be refreshing for a heroine. She didn't take crap from anyone, which is what Wesley liked about her. Casey seemed a bit like a control-freak, overbearing friend sometimes but she meant well. Jessica was so hard not to like because of her constant bubbliness. I really liked the resolution that happened between Toby and Bianca at the end
Spoiler them both using each other to get over their exes was so much better than just Bianca using him.
All in all, a semi-light read (what with everything Bianca's parents put her through) to use as a filler between your must-read novels.

Update: it’s just as good the second time.

It is nearly 2 in the morning and all I can think is yes good I love this book. I read this in one sitting and am in love with it and think that every human should give it a shot.

ATY 2018 #41 - A book by an author with the same first and last initials

UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2018
Screw it this gets 5 stars, honestly the number of times I reread parts of this book is insane I can't justify only giving it 4 when I enjoy it so much 💕

ORIGINAL REVIEW

Very much a guilty pleasure read that I love to return to whenever I feel the need for a light, slightly trashy but heartwarming YA book. I just really love the characters and the story and it goes deeper than you would think from what the blurb suggests. I've reread this book way more than I should but every single time it never gets any less enjoyable 😂 This is very different to the film, the family relationships are more nuanced in the novel and is less 'teen rom-com' than the film (still love the film though). Would recommend to any YA fiction fans.

UPDATE: JUNE 2018

I reread it again and I am not ashamed of it. While I know it's not a 5 star literary masterpiece it's still a favourite of mine whenever I need something light, breezy, and heartwarming to read 😊

No plot, constant pessimism, unnecessarily erotic. No depth or reason to recommend it to anyone.

I loved this book mostly because the author has such a great writing style ...

I went into this just knowing I was going to hate the term "Duff". I was right. But I really love how Bianca and Wesley both grow and change throughout the book. Both had life situations to deal with and their own issues and by the end you realize that hey, nobody's perfect and at some point we ALL feel like the DUFF. It was a rollercoaster of emotions mixed with sexy scenes and situations and left me feeling, if not like I'd read the best novel ever, at least like I'd read about some good characters that I wouldn't mind reading about again.

Omg I loved this book!! It was so funny and Bianca is such a loveable, quirky character! Best book I've read this year so far!!
