Tropes- friends to lovers
Representation: Viola is a trans main character, Gracewood has a disability from the war, uses a cane, queer side characters
CW: addiction, alcoholism, abelistic language, and some mis-gendering when talking about Viola pre- transition. Suicidal ideation

I loved so much about This book. The friendship and love between Viola and Gracewood is just beautiful. They were friends for years, torn apart by war and Gracewood thought his best friend died and it impacted him.

Viola realized how unhappy she was and came into her own and used the death to become alive in a way that felt right for her. But seeing Gracewood again is painful.

The longing, the tension, friendship and just overall swoon worthy moments made me happy. Only part that made me confused was the plot line with his sister and a kidnapping but outside of that it was a really good book.

Childhood friends to lovers historical romance with trans heroine and disabled hero. This book was beautiful. It’s the only word that fits. The story is beautiful, the characters are beautiful, their love is beautiful, and the epilogue is beautiful. It’s got sorrowful moments and silly moments, but all-in-all, it’s a beauty to read and experience.

I loved this book so much. I was so happy to get an ARC because this is one of the 2022 releases I was most excited for. We get a trans heroine reuniting with her childhood best friend who thought she had died during the war.

I loved these characters and their story. There were well written and hit all the right notes for me. The PINNING was just *chef’s kiss*. Despite dealing with some heavy topics (see book’s CW), the book never felt heavy. There was the right mix of angst, love, and joy. Viola and Gracewood truly saw each other for who they were, and their transition from friends to lovers was beautiful. Plus I loved how sweet and supportive Viola’s family was. Louise, Badger, and Miranda were hilarious; I laughed every time Louise said anything.

The book did lag a bit in the middle, but then it picked up again.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

This was very delightful!!!!

It was my first ever historical romance so I was a little wary. But this set a high bar for any I might read in the future lol. A great cast of characters. So many discussions of gendered expectations. The sex scenes were thoughtfully done and wonderfully queer.

I do think it could’ve been edited down a little more. It didn’t need to be 450 pages, and the pacing varied a lot. And I always wish that romances would give us a little more time to see how things go after the main characters finally get together. But I really really loved it.

thanks to the publisher for a free ARC & audio copy! The accents in the audio made it feel very immersive!
