I don't know what happened with her 12th book, but in lucky number thirteen, she manages to get back into her stride, at least as far as I'm concerned - this may have been her best Plum book to date. I love all of her current events references - the cable company charade as well as a million other things I can't remember anymore were fantastic. It was very now, very current, very good. The Morelli / Ranger thing manages to continue without feeling stale - ah, I just can't say enough. It was terrific. Can't wait for fourteen!

I love this series so much but this book was a little bit of a miss for me. I can’t stand Dickey and it was just a little boring. And I can’t believe I’m saying that about Stephanie Plum but it was just missing some of the Stephanie goodness. I can’t really explain it but it was not one of my favorites in this series.
Still one of my very favorite series. And will definitely be moving on to the next one but it was a bit meh.

A bit of a drop off from the past couple, but still fun.

Stephanie Plum has to be the most inept bounty hunter … or apprehension agent … that ever worked in Trenton (or anywhere). But she’s entertaining. First are the loony skips she goes after and the trouble she has taking them in. In this book she’s after Simon Diggery (grave robber and tax specialist), Carl Coglin (amateur taxidermist who specializes in exploding rodents), and Stewart Hansen (whose house Stephanie and Lula set fire to, causing a “happy” fire when the smoke from all the weed he had stored inside burns up). But those are just side shows. The REAL story is her ex-husband Dickie Orr and his law partners. Of course we have the usual tension between Stephanie and the two men in her life – Ranger and Morelli.
The audio book is narrated by Lorelei King. She does a fine job, giving life to every character. I especially like her interpretation of Grandma Mazur and Joyce Barnhardt.

I’m closing in on catching up with the series. In the latest adventure, Ranger has Stephanie doing some secret work that she’s hesitant to even tell her friends about, and especially not Joe. But when a visit to her ex-husband Dickie, turns into a fight, Stephanie finds herself the prime suspect in his recent disappearance and possible murder.
Positive she was going to have to figure out this mystery on her own, Stephanie finds herself in the middle of fire after fire, as buildings are burning and the body count continues to rise. If she’s ever feared for her life more, this would be that time.
This adventure was fun. The banter back and forth between Ranger and Joe over who’s turn it was to protect Stephanie was cute, followed by her making up her own mind and protecting herself. I’m loving how Ranger makes it no secret that with only the slightest signal his relationship with Stephanie who move to the next level and she would have no control over it. I love that Stephanie is coming into her own, maturing, not taking crap from anyone and finally doing something people can be proud of instead of always embarrassing them and herself.
