Champion of Midnight
This was better than I thought, but not as good as the first book. A lot has been revealed and/or discovered and Serenity has gained quite the partner. I'll definitely be reading the next book to see what else is in store.

This was so good. It took me a second to realise this series was familar to me and then I recalled book 1 and just fell into this series.
The series is so interesting for the lore of angels and demons. Something very interesting. Love this take on the whole god and also has a little Merlin and Arthur story. Love it.

Champion of Midnight was a great follow up to Protector of Midnight.
In this book Serenity is working with her team in Midnight, training to protect the humans and learn how to use her daggers. She has a couple run ins with the Fallen, takes part in the House games with the Sanguinata and Lupins, and suffers a grave loss (hopefully not a permanent one). This book was filled with action and emotion... I was hooked from the start.
Eagerly awaiting book 3!!!

While the world and the plot is interesting, I am not a fan of the writing at all. The book is written more like a stream of consciousness than a structured novel, and I found that much of the dialogue and sentences tended to be made of less than 5 words. It made for very stilted reading. Additionally, there was also too much descriptive telling going on instead of just showing and letting the reader draw their own conclusions. A random example:
As a result of the writing, I didn't feel many emotions when characters were killed off or betrayed, or even super invested in the FMC Serenity finding out the shocking truth of the origins of Arcadia. So much action happened in the book with characters getting kidnapped for one mysterious reason or the other and the brief chapters on the House games with a twist due to new character introductions. Relationships between characters were very surface-level, and we didn't find too much information about underlying motives. This series is ridiculously slow-burn - other than Bane and an admission of attraction for Ryker in the first book, not many other male characters in the cast stand out as part of her potential harem.
Serenity herself was also a super irritating character. She spent most of the book whining about how things weren't going her way, either from circumstance or her own mistakes. She repeatedly acted like she was such a bad-ass but was usually unable to actually fulfill the role and relied on the other men in her life to support her. When she does step up, it's usually from Mary-Sue-like suddenly developed confidence from her secret abilities.
I'm honestly only sticking to the series because I've seen other reviewers mention that it gets much better after the 3rd book. This book was very much a meh to me, similar to the first. This is the 2nd series by this author that I haven't been very enthusiastic about so far.
P.S. Cassie is such a bitch. Worst character ever.

I exhaled. It was just a room, a beautiful room, not a cage. Not this time anyway. The seat by the fire beckoned, but I needed a book first. Something to pass the hour.

This series is getting good but she makes some stupid mistakes just to save things. I think she needs to slow down since she did get someone killed already
I love the slow burn that this author always delivers. What I don't love is how they also feel something has to happen all the time. As a reader, I wish the characters would have a more realistic reaction to things that happen. I'd think with what happened with Drayton that we'd have a bit more than what we received for the grieving process. We literally got a half-page to delve into it before Bane was taking her off to close the loose end of her sister. The sister arc could have waited, it wasn't something that -had- to happen right then. We could have had more to pull us into the grief the FMC was supposed to be experiencing. We also see a lot less about the need to 'feed' after the FMC does something big. It was a huge topic in book one but now it seems to not be quite as important?
Every page doesn't have to be action-packed to keep the readers engaged. My last complaint is in regards to the ending. The FMC is about to do something stupid. Everyone - Bane, Black Wings, Voice in Head- all tell her that reaching out to the cult is a bad idea, but there's the author....about to have the FMC do something stupid for the sake of prolonging the story.

adventurous
medium-paced
It feels like many things happened and yet nothing happened at all. Good for binging tho.
So onwards and upwards. The world building grew in this book and started to get meaty and interesting which was good, but yet again, I worry this genre is just not for me.
Serenity was sassy, irritating, thoughtless... dare I say, stupid and naive? Yet she is so terribly special. Kill me now. Yet another snowflake.
Apart from having to ‘feed’, there are no hot times, no emotional connections, just hot guys milling around with potential. I got a bit tired of the very slow burn. There is no emotional connection going on here, just some banter now and again.
I’ve got this far so I’m ploughing on as the world building has my interest. I hope it becomes less of one event after another relating to a new magical being and starts to join up a bit more.
