Has the spunk and energy of a Janet Evanovich book . . . in fact, now that I think about it, this is like a West Coast Stephanie Plum. Instead of sizzling Ranger the bounty hunter, we have sizzling Runner the massage therapist . . . instead of the hot Italian Morelli, we have Martucci . . . instead of sexily-clad sidekick Lula, we have sexily-clad sidekick Brie. The doughnuts were the same on both coasts.
All that said, this book sneaks up on you with a surprisingly meaningful and thoughtful story.

I wish I could give this book zero stars. Absolutely terrible, predictable, and the main character is godawful. I finally had to stop midway through her depiction of the relationship between the main character and a young girl she mentors through Big Brothers / Big Sisters. I got so angry reading through stereotype after stereotype. As someone who actually mentors students, the writing could not have been more off base and offensive. Plus the writing was so sophomoric---I mean, who actually talks like that? Ugh, what a disaster. Do NOT recommend. I actually just gave my copy away at a book drive at work.
I was honestly expecting to be a little bored when I picked this up at the bookstore on a whim, but I was surprised. It's a quick, light read (didn't take me more than an hour or two), but it's utterly charming. Sure, it's a little transparent in places (I totally called a few of the plot points), but it made me laugh and it made me a little teary, and kept me engaged from start to finish.
I love rereading books I haven't read in ages.... it's like reading it for the first time.
eh. would make a very mediocre Lifetime movie. the idea is so interesting, but the writing is not very good. i liked the main character, and it was a quick read, but i wouldn't have finished this (or started it) if it wasn't a bookclub choice. i do think it could have been a good discussion though; touched on a lot of interesting topics.
adding later: just looked at other reviews and while many agree with me i'm sort of shocked at the number of people who liked it!

No, not classic literature or anything. But I thought this book was cute. It kept me entertained till the end, and that's all I expected of it.
