I enjoyed the book - even the flipped nature of it worked for me ... but I really didn't like the ending.
SpoilerIf Clara had stayed in the cafe, Peter would not have died. How could Louise do that to Clara (not to mention Peter)? And after everyone making sinister insinuations about the motives of the gallery owner, Clara is suddenly supposed to "get over" Peter and see him as a love interest???

This is number 10 in the wonderful Armand Gamache series by Louise Penny. I have read all but number 5; I somehow missed it and have not gone back. Chief Inspector Gamache has retired from the Surete and retreated to Three Pines, the small village which has seen its share of murders. He will not be left in peace as one of the villagers, Clara, an artist has a problem. This was not my favorite in the series as they were many repetitive visual descriptions of paintings and other pieces of art. I was more interested in the plot moving along and I felt it took a while to get going. For Gamache fans, it is a worth reading to keep up with the series; for those new to Gamache, start at the beginning with Still Life.

I don’t know what to think about this book. After the drama and excitement of the previous book in the series, this one SEEMED mild for the majority of the story, but in the last hour (I was listening to the audiobook) everything was turned on its head and I was left shocked.

I don’t think I can say I liked this book, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good story. It DID provoke emotions in me (though I can’t name them yet) and an author who can make me feel, is a good author in my opinion.

I’d just say, reader beware. You probably don’t know what you’re in for. But that only applies if you’ve read the books in order and are attached the the characters.

Disappointed and think I need to take a break from Gamache & friends.

Also way too many overwrought sentences from Louise Penny.

A bit disappointing specially after the excellent How the Light Gets In

My least favorite Gamache book. It slogs along until the very end.

what. an. ending. BAH.

Maybe it’s that Clara and Peter are my least favorite characters, but this one left me cold.
