The Long Way Home

Louise Penny

3.9 AVERAGE

Oh man, Louise Penny isn’t afraid to kill off a character! Anyone could be in danger in her books. The double-twisty ending was a big surprise. I was so happy that Peter had become a better person and still loved Clara, but the ending was so sad. This book had humor, character development, and plot. Very satisfying and bittersweet.

11/7 page 4 "Turmoil shook loose all sorts of unpleasant truths. But it took peace to examine them.""

11/13 page 105 "Everyone around the table knew how that felt. The horror of realizing all the toys, all the success, all the powerful boards and new cars and accolades hadn't filled the hole. They'd actually made it bigger. Deeper. There was nothing wrong with success, but it had to have meaning.""

11/20 page 277 "Don't get me wrong, I believe in using your head. But not in spending too much time in there. Fear lives in the head. And courage lives in the heart. The job is to get from one to the other."

p.278 "...The same loop. Mistaking movement for progress."

Meh

I really like this series but I guess I'm tired of the formula. This one just seemed like a huge stretch and there were so many fillers. I live Armand Gamache but this is not a great mystery.

The Long Way Home is another great book in this wonderful series. I did really enjoy Reine-Marie being more included in this book.

An interesting title. Which character is it meant for? Peter or Gamache. Gamache is newly retired in Three Pines. Peter, the artist husband of Clara, the artist has not returned home after being exiled by her for a year separation. He has missed the deadline. Clara confides in Gamache and seeks his help in finding him. Thus begins a search and a sweep of the couple’s past to include art school and finally ending in a remote village at the mouth of the Saint Lawrence River accessible only by plane or boat. Some devious twists and a shocking ending.

This was good, as are all of Penny’s books. This one didn’t quite draw me in as much as her others, but that could, perhaps, be because this is the third one in a row that I’ve read. I’ve found that, for me, in this series, it’s better to read books by other authors in between each of the Inspector Gamache novels.
