I love Louise Penny and Gamache and her writing style, but in this book...not so much. Really couldn't buy Gamache, Jean-Guy, and the gals taking off from life, work, and family to go on an aimless jaunt around Canada. And who would give a former chief of police doing an unofficial investigation the time of day?
Too many coincidences. Too many leaps of faith. Too often 'I saw this in him.'
Clara is wearing thin. The old profane poet is wearing thin. And I'm tired of the duck.

Everything until the end was fine. The end was a point the author was trying to make about life, rather than something that really fit with the plot. Penny seems to let her male characters off easily and make her female characters really suffer, like long-term suffering. I don't understand why that is necessary, and it definitely irritates me.
Okay-it is a bit contrived but I loved this book and was a bit tearful at the end. On to book 11.
Some changes have taken place... Inspector Gamache has retired, and he and his wife Reine-Marie are now living in Three Pines. But Armand Gamache doesn't retire completely, it seems. When Clara (finally) let's him know that Peter was expected but never showed up, Reine-Marie begins to get a glimpse into how Armand defines retirement.
The Long Way Home is another page-turning mystery that once again has us in the Art World, visiting the college where both Peter and Clara studied - and where they met, and trying to trace where Peter has been over the past year since leaving Three Pines.
I was surprised by the ending... but I'll leave it at that.

This one was my least favorite in the series so far and took me longer to get through it. I agree with other reviews that it felt like a “filler” story and Peter is my least fav character, but Clara started to become an unlikeable character in this one too. The end felt rushed and slightly unbelievable with the murder/motive. Still plan to keep with the series though.

There’s a time after you have read a lot of novels in a short period that you find yourself unable to get into anything. You start one book , put it down, try another, and put that down too. It’s at a time like this that I return to Louise Penny and the Gamache series to get over my readers ‘block’. “The Long Way Home” certainly helped in my recovery, and, as always, I enjoyed the general flow of the narrative, but, for me, it wasn’t up there with the best of them. Maybe part of the reason was because it centered on my least favorite Three Pines characters, and maybe because the initial murder method just didn’t convince. Not the best, but not to be missed either. Just also wanted to thank the friend who has badgered me into listening to the audiobook versions read by Ralph Cosham. I started the series again listening to the audiobooks and have now just finished number 4. Cosham really nails it.
