A bit conflicted here. It's a lighthearted, fun book, but it felt like it was doing a bit too much. The "Eyre affair" part of The Eyre Affair didn't really get started until about the 80% mark. There were a lot of sub-plots and world building that happened before that. I enjoyed it, but I feel like it could have been a much tighter book and packed a bigger punch. Will I read another Thursday Next novel? ... maybe.

This is a really weird book and I don't understand half of it so far. There's this person stuck in a poem and a detective-like person who meets a criminal... Maybe I'll understand when I read the rest.

What to say about Thursday Next? The Eyre Affair is clever, witty, creative, and interesting. The second read was just as much fun as my first.
Graphic: Fire/Fire injury
Moderate: Gun violence, Kidnapping, War
I couldn't get in the spirit of the "literary slapstick" style as one incisive friend put it. Oh well, you might like this if you're a Bronte and/or Dickens fan and do OK with "look how clever I'm being!" humor.

2019: this time i was most aware of the political undertones, which i like, and the way the language changes subtly when Thursday enters the text of Jane Eyre. Even back in her present day Swindon, when she speaks to a character her speech takes on a Victorian flourish. I still love Thursday as a character after all these years (almost 20, lollllllllllllll). She's tough and brilliant and brave, and is only stupid and catty twice.
2012: lost a little sparkle in my second reading, more than ten years after my first. the british references are fun, now that I live here, but the writing is clumsy at times, and cliche often. I was surprised how little of the plot is actually devoted to the eyre affair- most of it is in pursuit of acheron hades, or following Thursday around Swindon. there were great portions of the book where nothing much really happens at all. but Thursday is a compelling character, and inside jokes about literature will always be my cup of tea.
