For me, personally, as a memoirist, and also a reader, I felt like the beginning half of the memoir is at odds with the later half. It lays the foundations, sure, but I think instead those foundations could be told in context of why these chapters are important. So much of the first half is telling; why does it matter? We get the answer to that question after her first institutionalization which is why the latter half is more compelling and (I would argue) important.

i’m so glad i picked this up at the book store on a whim. so well written and powerful! i loved this one
The title was perfect for how the book was written. I do think the author picked a weird spot to end the book.
ngl this felt like a more honest version of crying at h mart. song is a beautiful writer. maybe it’s because my own life parallels so much of hers, but i haven’t read a book where i felt more seen.

Thank you to Simon & Shuster for a copy of this book in exchange for a review. Docile is a compilation of memoirs about Hyeseung Song's immigration to America from South Korea. We read about the obstacles she has been dealt, and Docile is a very deep and emotional read. This memoir discusses the subjects of racism, mental health, relationship development, and trauma.
I would highly recommend this. I'm not super acquainted with rating memoirs, but I thought this one was really good. I like reading about people's life experiences that are a lot different than mine. During this read I felt every emotion, and I eventually teared up at the end. The writing was great, and everything was fleshed out well.
