I love the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell. I love kayaking. This book made me appreciate both more and add a river trip down the Colorado onto my for sure bucket list instead of just a pipe dream. There are so many layers of history and story lines that cross in unexpected ways. I only gave it 3 stars because it gets a little too into itself and wanders into details frequently. A streamlined version would have made for a better read - I listened to the audiobook and I had to take breaks to read something less dense before coming back.

Wow! One of the best books I have read in quite a while. Supposedly it tells the story of a somewhat covert race to break the speed record for going down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon, but it is SO MUCH more than that. A history lesson, a geological discussion, a meteorological explanation, a dialogue on the physics of fluid flows and a philosophical exegesis on the importance of the natural world all rolled into one. And Mr. Fedarko is able to wrap it all up in a compelling story that keeps you reading long after you should have gone to bed. I highly recommend giving this book a test ride.

The first half gets a bit dry, talking about the geology of the Grand Canyon, the burst of environmentalism from those who were first rafting it, and the construction and problems of the dams around it. However, the second half gets into the speed attempt itself and was a fast paced listen/read. Great for anyone who loves river rafting or intensive outdoor challenges.

I cannot say in words just how incredible this book is. I've read this book cover to cover twice and am still gripped by the book the entire way through.

Fedarko has SUCH incredible control of language, and his love for the Grand Canyon truly comes out in his writing. This book is a masterpiece of writing, regardless of genre.

Hurry up and write a second book!

As someone who likes the Grand Canyon as a casual hiker but knows nothing about the river guiding community, this was an absolutely fascinating read. I loved how the author went through relevant history of the canyon and the dam, weaving those seemingly separate stories together into a really interesting, comprehensive retelling. I definitely finished this book with a newfound respect for the river guides, environmentalists, dam engineers, park service employees, and the canyon itself.

My only complaint is that the author is very descriptive, leading to a slower pace. It took me a few chapters to really get into the book but I’m super glad I stuck with it.
