Not terrible, Gulliver's Travels gives the same vibes without all the incomprehensible (imo) nautical slang nor the deeply out-dated religious chaste mindset.

I feel generous so I'm giving this EXTREMELY BORING book 2 stars. The book is 400 pages but if you removed all the boring parts where he goes on and on about unnecessary details no one cares about, the entire book could easily fit in 20 pages. It was a torture to read page after page of the writer repeating same things over and over with way too much detail and in most boring way he possibly could with extremely long sentences and all that.

Меня все чтение книги мучило - да он бухгалтер, что ли, или все его современники такую манеру все учитывать считали ученостью?
И потом уже прочитал, что он реально работал в том числе бухгалтером 8-)

Книга для своего времени просто гениальная.

И удивительно как, с одной стороны, она вполне читабельна сейчас.
А с другой стороны местами там вылазит уже инопланетная для нас мораль тех людей.
Отправляющих произвольных женщин в мужья - пусть там выберут себе. Подразумевающих что захваченный "дикарь" будет верным слугой, и вообще его надо обращать в правильную веру - и какие тут еще могут быть мысли?

И так далее.

Еще меня удивило, что в книге совсем не затрагиваются вопросы идентификации героя после его возвращения после 30 летнего отсутствия.
Прекраснодушие тех, кто ему вернул его имущество это скорее такой памфлет автора, как и его рассуждения о боге.
Но почему ни у кого не возникло ни малейших сомнений, что это не самозванец.

Кстати, рассуждения о боге мне местами даже напомнили вставки про Сталина и коммунизм в советские книги. Наверно автор был искренен, но выглядит местами как страховка чтобы ненароком книгу не "зарезали цензоры".

Кстати у автора реально был опыт стояния у позорного столба за политический памфлет.

This book was a nightmare to be honest. Same kind of repetition over and over again with nothing new. This is supposedly one of the best pioneer novels or classic but I found it boring. This could have been a great saga of survival but it was painfully the same words over and over again.

Incredibly entertaining for the style of its time, yet so hideously racist that it's impossible to enjoy most of it. The scrappy child I was, forever building forts in the woods behind my house, was so very drawn to the resourcefulness that is the heart of this story... but no. A deep and resounding no.
