There was so much I liked about this book, and at the same time, so much that drove me crazy.

The first 25% was painfully slow. It was hard to stay interested. There was more description of the wilderness than there was actual storyline. I almost gave up on the book several times.

That said, I found myself invested in the characters and intrigued by the many layers of the story, once I got about halfway through.

Overall, it was very readable but could have done without a lot of "filler"

I pretty much thought this novel was trash. it was cliché, predictable, and it was incredibly uninspired. The author felt the need to spell out every decision her characters made throughout the story instead of allowing the reader to wonder and infer on their own. A lot of phrases were overused and a lot of advanced words felt very out of place. I thought the sex scene was supposed to convey something powerful for our main very traumatised heroine but it just read like a cheap erotica novel. And the descriptive rapes and torture felt like it crossed the line from "look what she went through" to "this is what the killer likes and why he's so perverse". But we don't need to know why, we already know what the killer is capable of from what he did. Anyway, I thought this book was awful.

4.5 stars for sure!
I LOVED this story! The only reason it doesn’t get five stars as per usual for Loreth Anne White, is that this one started off a little slow for me. L.A.W. typically hits the ground running and this one was more of a slow burn. Once it got moving, I could not put it down! I have The Dark Bones (#2 in the series) ready to go and am super excited to start it.

Spoiler: The dog lives.

I found this to be a decent mystery. It might be a bit gory for some and the romantic angle was a bit too Harlequin Romance for me, but it kept me entertained for a few hours.

This mostly gets marks for its atmosphere - I enjoyed the setting and I felt we got to know the characters quite well; it's definitely more character driven than plot driven. The plot is the weakest part, mostly because there are three "twists" but they are all extremely obvious from the very start, so it was a bit disappointing that it was so long before they were officially revealed. I kept expecting there to be more twists and turns, but it's a very straight-forward thriller.

A consultant of Olivias case and his daughter Tori come to the ranch, after luring the serial killer there. Tori is the daughter of Olivia.
