So... I really liked it when I started reading it and throughout the book I got more questions, which I liked. But the ending especially the last chapter sucked. It was a big summary and you got a bunch of pieces that needed to fit together and in the end it might've been quite predictable. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either.

I don't know if this is because I've been reading too many sad books lately, but this really drained me. It's beautiful, but somewhat draining. Would've been better if it was a little more fast-paced. But still a nice read.
It seems to me there has been an influx of YA books on the subject of suicide. Recently I have read Thirteen Reasons Why, I Was Here, and now Playlist for the Dead. As far as Playlist for the Dead is concerned it wasn't as good as the others. Just being honest. It was very mediocre. Are you wondering why then did I rated it 4 Stars? The playlist. Every chapter is a song and in that chapter the song or band is mentioned in some way. What I did was make a playlist and listen to it as I read the book. When I would start a new chapter I put that song on. I love the music that was picked. I have heard most of the songs/bands already, but not all. IT'S A VERY GOOD PLAYLIST! I feel like with the playlist as a companion to the novel you get a fuller reading/emotional experience. Plus, it adds something fun and different to a meh book.
playlist for the dead was the first read of the year for me so i was slightly biased towards it. it's a debut novel of michelle falkoff which was published in 2015.
sam's best friend, hayden, is dead and all he has left behind is a suicide note with a playlist of songs. the only thing sam knows is that the night before they were at a party and there was fight. but he doesn't know why.
soon, the bullies who made hayden's life hell start getting attacked and sam is receiving texts from someone claiming to be his dead best friend. now he has to figure out what is going on and the only thing he can rely on is the playlist that hayden left for him.
the book first came into my recommendations when i bought jay asher's #13reasonswhy back in 2017. the title was quite attractive as you can tell so when i finally decided to read the book this year, i was excited and had high expectations.
unfortunately, they weren't met.
while the story was quite good from sam's perspective, it did not relate much with any other elements of the book. many things were left unexplained and it felt like a lot more hype was created than it could offer later on. the title of the book itself, in my opinion, was a bit misleading because there isn't much that we explore from the aspect of the playlist or suicide nor does most of it relate to the actual story that we read.
the storytelling was more focused on sam's life after hayden but it failed to actually spark any emotions towards his pain. we see him listening to a song in every chapter from the playlist, trying to understand what it could mean while recalling the memories with his friend but that's pretty much the extent of the role that the playlist actually plays throughout the book.
overall, i give the book a 2 stars rating. i didn't like it much but i didn't totally hate it either. i feel like it could've done well had the plot focused solely on sam and his life after losing his best friend instead of trying to give it the element of mystery or even the playlist that it more or less failed at. i would still give any other book that the author writes a try but this one wasn't for me.

I thought I would LOVE this book. It sounded similar to [b:Thirteen Reasons Why|1217100|Thirteen Reasons Why|Jay Asher|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1333822506s/1217100.jpg|2588213], only with music. The chapters were all based on songs on a playlist left by Hayden for his best friend, Sam, after Hayden commits suicide.
I thought Sam would interpret the songs and lyrics and come to terms with why Hayden committed suicide as the chapters went on. Instead, I had to force myself through each chapter. The playlist really had no point. And in the end, the story just seemed to fall flat.

Not my cup of tea.
Disappointing. Predictable. The playlist was just a gimmick and never really added to the plot. This book was an After School Special TV movie version of The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.
