I love how this novel was constructed - the lives of four immigrant women were reconstructed through their own and their daughter’s perspectives. The tragedies they endured, the cultural believes and identities they kept, and how their relationship with their daughters were complex, genuine, and often hindered by good intentions lost in translation, wow.
If you like a generational story, some complex mother-daughter relationships (due to cultural and circumstantial differences), history, and stories about perseverance, pick up The Joy Luck Club!

Loved the various stories about each of the ladies. After having lived in and left Sam Francisco I now love hearing references to my former home so this was so nice to have sprinkled in.

A very emotional book.
why is it that the fictions I read, the ones based in China, always have concubines in them ? Ok the only other book I read thats based in China is 'The Good Earth'. May be I shouldnt draw conclusions based only on these two books.

I really liked this one! I love a good intergenerational diaspora story and this one really hit. The details of the mother-daughter relationships and the way the stories and the writing intersected to illuminate all the types of relationships and emotions just worked. The descriptive writing was also both vibrant and interesting. And each individual story, especially those of the mothers, was captivating, while fitting together into the whole thematic narrative. (although I would've liked more on the friendship between the Joy Luck Club members themselves) I definitely did cry by the end of the book because I got so invested. In sum: extremely good!
