Damn. Wtf.

An absurd and chilling story of the weight of bureaucracy on every citizen (even, perhaps especially, on those lower on its ladder). It took me a bit to really understand what Kafka was going for, but once I leaned into the absurdism, I found the book very gripping. It being unfinished certainly influences my views on it, and I am still a bit uncomfortable with the portrayal of Leni; however, I really enjoyed this book, and I will most likely read The Castle soon.

si alguno de los que me conoce en vida se atreve a publicar lo que pedí explícitamente que quemaran y a justificarse en el postfacio de mi libro yo me veré obligado a volver a la vida con toda la furia del inframundo. quedan avisados

Interesting yet pessimistic. Despite my nihilistic tendanies, I am very much an optimist. So reading this extremely negative take on society/humanity I found myself disagreeing with the fundamental assumptions and posits.

An incredible work of literature. Unfortunately, I can't help but see how Kafka viewed women. It's unsettling but nothing out of the ordinary for the average man. Couldn't help but roll my eyes every-time a female character was part of a chapter. Considering the character in the book is very clearly supposed to be him, the way he views himself made me understand why he burned 90% of his material, and wanted all of this gone too. Completely understand him, with all the qualms I have about the way he writes women I can't help but find Kafka way too relatable.

Rating a book like this is almost impossible. This is the book that made "Kafkaesque" a concept. The main character is Joseph K, who finds himself arrested for an unspecified crime. He is allowed to live at home and continue to work, but knowing there is a process being mounted against him in a non-judicial court. He engages a lawyer on recommendation from an uncle. This seems to only make things worse.

How can you defend yourself or confess to a crime you are supposed to have done, but do not know you have committed? You can't. This is a deeply unpleasant book.
