A cool action adventure giving vibes of Elias Carl from Person of Interest or Blacklist vibes. The protagonist is now in debt to a crime boss in prison, running his empire from there. He wants to be free, and while out of prison, he is not free. How far will he go, to see his daughter, to have some sort of life, and is is possible to get out? I’m excited to see what happens next!
Brief content warning: there is one open door scene in this book that is less than a page in length. It is not overly descriptive but enough that some may be uncomfortable, and I chose to skip over it as much as I could. There are a couple other references but those remain closed door scenes.

Nick Mason has served 5 years of a 20 year prison sentence. He gets the chance to leave jail right now, but in exchange, he must answer his phone at any moment to do the biddings of the drug lord who orchestrated his release.
This one was not bad, but not that good either. I don’t think this one was good enough to get me hooked on the whole series either. I’d pass on this one because there are better books in this genre worth a read.

The writing was good, I just wasn't all that into the whole storyline. Not sure if I'll read more in the series or not - I'm kind of interested in what happens to the characters but we'll see!

Writing was good but the story itself was a bit cheesy to me. Very similar to any “gangster “ prison story.
Main character has “rules” he lives by.
He tells the cops and the bad guys “no” and that pretty much is totally fine. (Riiight)
Based in Chicago which apparently makes it automatically gangster. (But it’s set in current day)
Steals aspects from The Usual Suspects (maybe the author though we forgot?)
It even goes down to the hand-to-hand fight at the end.

I just could not make myself care about this. I heard some glowing review about it on NPR and wanted to check it out, but none of it was interesting. I just don't have the time for books with no female characters that have any agency, just damsels in distress and one-dimensional love interests. That's what this was.
I heard a lot of buzz about this book and it's as I was told-- quick and breezy, more like a screenplay than a novel. I got about fifty percent through and realized I just didn't care about the character or what happened to him, so I quit.
Nick mason is a solid character... The cliches seemed necessary to make this into a series, but the character and storyline are strong enough for me to look forward to the next book. Enjoy.
