This was my first Steve Hamilton book which was a nice introduction to his work. The story had a nice pace giving the backstory along with setting up the work Nick will have to do in the future, along with the future tensions between Nick and the other characters such as Cole. It will be interesting to see if Hamilton develops more nuanced women characters. Many of them seemed a bit cliche. I am still scratching my head on how he developed a relationship so quickly with the pet store owner in between maintaining his commitments to Cole. Although I would like to see more nuanced women characters, I still enjoyed the premise of the book and look forward to reading the next in the series.

boring macho bluster. the women are cardboard. the men, so manly! with their code of ethics! ugh.

Loved it, great new character. Will be looking forward to where Hamilton takes nick in the future, could become a great series.

I've read every Steve Hamilton book and am a great admirer of the author's work. Out of all of the books to date this the one that didn't ring true.

Nick Mason's story grabbed me and made me want to keep reading until all those loose ends needed tying up. The last quarter of the book wasn't fully credible and the ending was left for a sequel in the most cynical way.

This is the third book of Hamilton's I have read, being fortunate to start with the Lock Artist.
The Second Life of Nick Mason stars of course Nick Mason, a southside of Chicago local who gets 25 years in prison for armed robbery and murder. Nick does the honorable thing and does not rat out his co conspirators and sort of like Lee Child's Jack Reacher, lives his life in prison and outside of it by a set of rules.

The way Nick carries himself gets himself in prison gets him noticed and he is presented with a compelling choice, one that could get him out of prison early, but at a heavy price.

Quick, fast paced compelling read.

Really good classic noir tale, but not about the lone PI in the office with the whisky drawer. Instead, it's about a guy who gets released from a twenty-five-to-life sentence and the ties that bind.

Saw this one the new books shelf at the library, I'd never heard of the author so I figured I'd give it a try. Mistake.

The characters are cardboard, the plot is paint by numbers.

Worse, it's just dumb. Basic thief is in prison for not telling cops which friend killed someone in a robbery gone bad. Crime boss in prison, living as if he's in Medellin, not Illinois, springs the guy to do what the criminal wants. Suddenly the "hero" is a tough guy with a perfect shot.

Avoid this.

A well-written, fast-paced thriller that was hard to put down.
