I don't know how to rate this one. It was a hopeful story in the end but it was hard to get through. It was a short book but somehow dragged on.

This is my second book by Cherie Dimaline; it was completely engrossing and heart-wrenching. I highly recommend the audiobook - Meegwun Fairbrother did a phenomenal job. I'm definitely reading the next book in this series in audiobook form as well.

I so wanted to love this book given it was recommended Candy Peterson who with her husband, Rolf, have volunteered 50+ years at the Moose & Wolf Project on Isle Royale. We visited the research center earlier this month, and we enjoyed talking and learning from Rolf and Candy. As for the book, it’s super disjointed and hard to follow. It’s a futuristic novel whose premise is about how whites have destroyed the land and have lost their ability to dream. In an attempt to recovering the dream ability, they are hunting down the indigenous people of Native North Americans to harvest their bone marrow. As I understand it, the bone marrow is the key to the dreaming process. It’s a weird story and is not very well written. Also, I really didn’t like any of the main indigenous characters, except the elder Minerva. I give it 2 of 5 stars.

The premise of the book is extremely with the times even though it’s set in a futuristic world.

While fiction, you can’t help but correlate these fictional events with what happens today and what has happened in the past.

While I do enjoy plot driven books, I personally prefer strong character arcs and need to be invested in the characters. I just was not invested in any of the characters.

It was a good read, but I just wanted more emotion, more connection. I wanted to feel the fear or disparate these characters felt. I wanted to be immersed in the world, but felt like I was just peaking in as an outsider.
